How Forgiveness Heals Even Books! by Special Guest Brianna Tibbetts (Head Over Tails Blog Tour)

We are thrilled to welcome Brianna Tibbetts to Lands Uncharted today as part of the blog tour celebrating her upcoming new release, Head Over Tails! I'll share more about the book and other stops on the tour below, but first, I'll let Brianna share about the theme of forgiveness in her story.

How Forgiveness Heals Even Books!

From the very first draft of Head Over Tails, the character of Jacob had a strong relationship with his father. In the majority of the early drafts, if Jacob’s mother was mentioned at all, it was implied the two didn’t speak. The longer I worked on the story, the more detailed the rift between Jacob and his mother grew. Eventually, I could tell you all of the reasons Jacob was mad at her, all the reasons she’d made the choices she had, and exactly how Jacob’s father felt about all of it.

Despite this, Jacob’s mother wasn’t actually in the book. As recently as 2019, Meredith Pearson was a fully formed character I knew almost everything about, and yet she’d never stepped onto the actual pages of the story. That summer, I had an epiphany about the structure of the book. I was going to rewrite the whole thing. Again.

As I started to plan that rewrite, I realized something important was missing. Jacob’s character arc involved a lot of self-reflection. In order for the changes in his worldview to feel believable by the end of the book, he was going to have to confront all of his issues, not just the most plot relevant ones. And that meant it was time for Meredith to finally show up.

Jacob’s journey to forgive his mother, and in return being forgiven by her, was the lynchpin to his arc. Once Meredith was an actual piece of the narrative, every other part of Jacob’s development was more believable. Until that rewrite, I hadn’t understood that she was such a necessary piece of the story Head Over Tails was telling.

Choosing to forgive is difficult, but powerful. As soon as I added Jacob’s reconciliation with his mother into the book, his arc was so much stronger. The journey I’d had him on hadn’t started at chapter one. Instead, it had begun a year earlier, during a shouting match with his mother. Parts of that groundwork already existed in the book, but only as they related to Jacob’s fear. In order to work through his fear and face it, Jacob needed to also let go of the resentment, frustration, and anger too. Forgiveness was the missing ingredient.

It was natural to include forgiveness in Jacob’s arc, because its importance is a large part of my own personal worldview. I had good people in my life growing up who helped me understand that resentment is corrosive. That meant I knew firsthand the power forgiveness had in the real world. Discovering it could heal Head Over Tails too and make it stronger was incredible. I hope Jacob’s character arc speaks to readers, and that anyone who struggles with any of the same things may find encouragement in his journey.

What a beautiful, powerful message, Brianna! Thank you so much for sharing with us today! Now I'm even more excited to read the book :) Speaking of which, here's the back cover blurb for Head Over Tails:

Mermaids meet mental health in this light-hearted story of life, love, and learning to grow into who you were meant to be.

Their love is true...but is it real?

Fear of inheriting his father’s hallucinations and memory loss have brought Jacob’s life to a screeching halt at age nineteen. Now he spends his days alone on the beach behind his home, staring into the endless Hawaiian waves.

Mermaid Sevencea is eager to explore life above the water—and cheer up the handsome, lonely young man strolling on the shores. Forming a bond with him is as natural as swimming. All she needs are legs to walk beside him, so Sevencea disappears to trade for the necessary magic.

Yet when she returns, Jacob is gone, convinced she was a hallucination after all.
And the more Sevencea searches for him, the more she doubts what they have will last.

Can love truly exist between land and sea?

A sweet YA mermaid-meets-human romance set within the lovely vistas of Hawaii.

You can rush off to buy it on Amazon or other retailers, or you can order a signed paperback (with exclusive swag!) HERE. And if you pre-order an ebook, fill out THIS FORM to receive preorder swag!

Interview with Allison Tebo (The Goblin and the Dancer Blog Tour)

We are so excited to welcome Allison Tebo to Lands Uncharted today! Allison is a fun author of fairy tale retellings whom I've had the opportunity to connect with through the Facebook group we founded together, Faith and Fairy Tales, and she is such a kind, thoughtful person. And she just released a new book, The Goblin and the Dancer - we get to be a part of her Blog Tour to celebrate! I'll include more information about the book and Blog Tour below (including a fabulous GIVEAWAY!), but first, let's hear from Allison!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a Christian author in my late twenties. I am the youngest of four children and I have a twin sister. I have a background in sales, but I now spend most of my day writing conversations between imaginary people. When I’m not writing fairy tales, I’m writing action adventure speculative fiction for T Spec Fiction, the e-zine I run with my three sisters. When I’m not creating new worlds with a keyboard, I love to create them with paint or charcoal by utilizing my certificates in cartooning and children’s illustrating from London Art college. When not dabbling in the imaginary realm, I enjoy baking, reading, and defending my title of Gif Master!

Ha, Gif Master is a title worth defending! What prompted you to start writing? Are you one of those authors who knew you were meant to write since childhood, or did it come as a discovery later in life?

I was telling stories with my Legos, dolls, and plastic dinosaurs for as long as I can remember, but I actually started writing at the age of ten, because I was imitating my big sister. My first story was a one page mystery, a very bad one. It has since been destroyed.

Even though I officially started out my writing career because I was imitating someone else, I think the career choice was rather inevitable. I grew up in a family of storytellers and was surrounded by storytelling day and night. It definitely didn’t take me long to start writing simply because I had to! The stories had to get out.

Sometimes it does feel like the stories decide to be written rather than an author deciding to write... Which fictional character (book or movie) do you most relate to, and why?

One character I relate to a lot is Joy from Inside Out. She is highly motivated, almost solely motivated, by helping others and she has a lot of enthusiasm and zest for life. She’s almost aggressive in her friendliness and helpfulness and she loves intensely. She’s very energetic and enthusiastic, but she also has a tendency to micromanage. I don’t usually relate to a lot of characters in fiction, but I saw so much of myself in Joy that it startled me.

What a great character to relate to! We’re all about exploring new worlds here at Lands Uncharted—if you could choose one place to visit, real or fictional, where would you go?

Ah, what a hard question! If I were visiting a fictional world I suppose I would have to pick Narnia: it’s the imaginary world that I’ve yearned for the longest. If it were a real world location, I would pick the Wizard of Oz theme park in Beech Mountain, NC. It looks like an amazing little place dedicated to one of the best book series in existence.

Ooh, I've never heard of that theme park! I bet it's amazing! Now, please share one of your favorite writing tips.

When you’re done writing your book, don’t immediately submit it to beta readers. I see a lot of newbie indie authors do this. Definitely have someone with strong developmental editing skills go over your draft first. Make sure your story is solid, structurally, before rushing into proof reading. Be ready to accept instructive criticism and to rewrite your book until it is truly polished work.

Completely agreed. Your newest book, The Goblin and the Dancer, released on September 10th! Congratulations!! What inspired the Villain’s Ever After series, and how did you choose The Steadfast Tin Soldier for your retelling?

The Villains Ever After collaboration was the brainchild of the brilliant Camille Peters. I saw her pitch for the series in a Facebook group and it was such a fun idea that I asked if I could participate. Ultimately, twelve fairy tale authors assembled with the goal of making cross promotion fun by collaborating on a fairy tale series with villainous twists.

As for The Steadfast Tin Soldier, I’ve had an infatuation with goblins (or any ugly little creature) for some time. I had also watched a YouTube video where a Lego orc had a crush on Arwen that, alas, didn’t work out, I found myself thinking that the ugly guy should have had a fair shot at winning the girl’s heart. I was determined to do an elf and goblin love story and was on the lookout for an opportunity to present itself. When I joined the Villains Ever After collaboration shortly thereafter, I began looking through fairy tales to retell and discovered, with delight, a reference to a villainous goblin in the story of The Steadfast Tin Soldier. Here, at last, was my opportunity to write the goblin and elf romance. The rest is history!

Aww, now I'm even more excited to read it! What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of writing fairy tale retellings?

That’s a hard question! I love so many things about the fairy tale genre. I love the allegorical elements, the strange and lighthearted oddities, the fantastic creatures and wondrous settings. But I think, ultimately, writing fairy tales is very cathartic. When the world doesn’t make sense, I can still take something weird and try to inject logic and reason into it. I’m not able to answer all the worlds’ questions, but I can provide answers for why Cinderella’s father married the wicked stepmother! Writing fairy tales is a way for me to bring answers, order, and clarity to a part of my mind that craves it. I also love stories that almost demand sweet endings. There’s enough sorrow in the world: I love making people laugh and giving readers the assurance that they will be completely satisfied and happy when they reach the final page.

My least favorite aspect of writing fairy tales? Probably all of the connotations for overly fluffy romances, instead of good, solid stories. That, or the people who tell you you’re not a ‘real’ writer because you write retellings instead of creating your ‘own’ plots. How frustrating!

Ugh, that is definitely frustrating. Can you give us any insights into your next project?

I’m plotting out several more fairy tale retellings. One is based on Jack and the Beanstalk and set in a world inspired by Vietnam/Cambodia and another is a Pied Piper set on a fictional tropical island! And, as always, I create fairy tale flash fiction and fairy-tale themed articles and games on Patreon every month!

Ooh, fun! Thank you so much for sharing with us today, Allison! Congratulations again on your new release! You can connect with Allison on her website, Instagram, Patreon, Facebook, newsletter, Amazon, and Goodreads. And here's the back cover blurb for The Goblin and the Dancer:

Grik the goblin spends his days as a janitor cleaning the Metropolitan Dance Hall, drawn to the Elvish world and tired of the darkness of his underground home. He secretly pines for the ballet company’s lead dancer, Rosanna, but his own ugliness and shyness stand in the way of confessing his love.

When a handsome soldier named Paul appears on the scene to make a bid for Rosanna's affections, Grik’s jealousy bubbles over and he commits the unthinkable, plunging all of them into the river and down into the depths of the earth.

Determined to redeem himself, Grik leads Rosanna and Paul through the place he calls home: but even a goblin can’t be prepared for everything that is found underground. Trapped in the dark, nightmares both within and without rise to the surface, threatening to destroy them all.

A magical and heartfelt retelling of The Steadfast Tin Soldier about finding your worth.

Doesn't it sound fantastic? And that cover!! You can purchase The Goblin and the Dancer on Amazon. Oh, and did we mention something about a giveaway? :) You can enter for a chance to win HERE. Good luck!

Creating the World of Terabu by Special Guest Lauren Salisbury (Discernment Blog Tour)

Today we are thrilled to welcome Lauren Salisbury to Lands Uncharted as part of the blog tour celebrating her new release, Discernment! Discernment is the latest installment in The Legacy Chronicles, a series inspired by the life of Moses and the women around him. Fascinating, right? And Lauren took the time to share about her worldbuilding with us! I'll share more about Discernment and the blog tour below (including a GIVEAWAY!!), but first, here's Lauren!

Creating the World of Terabu

Worldbuilding is my happy place. I love everything about it from flora and fauna to cultural systems and histories. For each new setting in The Legacy Chronicles, I start with one concrete idea and built from there. In book one, U’du needed a harsh environment for the slaves to endure. The space cruiser where the Esarelians lived in book two needed to reflect their cold, unfeeling natures and their focus on advancement and prestige. Terabu needed to be completely different from either of those, and it had to revolve around trade.

The culture of Terabu, I decided, would be vibrant, with many layers to explore. It is partially based on my experiences of living in the Middle East and was so much fun to create. The textures, colours, and scents are big and bold, dazzling in their array, inviting in their warmth. The people are hospitable, traditional, and honourable. The weather is temperate, and the scenery is stunning.

One of the things I loved most about my time in Beirut was the food. Rich, fresh, and flavourful, even the thought of some of those meals makes my mouth water and evokes wonderful memories. I did not insert specific dishes into Discernment, but the overall feel of their food is the same. Lots of stews and salads, spices and dips, fruit eaten fresh from the trees, and a cottage industry around an olive-like plant called roiga.

In terms of the society itself, the first decision I made was to remove money from the equation, creating a stark contrast with the other species in the series. Teraburans use a barter system built on honour, where a man’s word is his bond. This led naturally to an abhorrence for lying that allowed me to put several characters in situations where that could be tested. It also informed some of the colloquialisms used in the novel.

“But how did you translate this into a science fiction setting?” you ask. By being extremely creative and by employing my secret weapons—my nieces.

I try to include them in my writing journey because I love feeding their creativity, and they get so excited about seeing their ideas in print. Terabu’s flora and fauna began with a strange plant with black sap called qayk and half-chicken half-octopus type creatures called vevom. Did I mention I went to my youngest nieces for Discernment? That was okay, it provided a challenge, and they got to have fun inventing weird and wonderful things.

Other aspects came from being the quirky individual that I am. I love to play with things, finding unique ways to see them. Graxylan came from wondering how dangerous sloths would be if they could move fast. Duntratha are my answer to how to insert dragons into science fiction—you make them wingless and use them to ride. And space pirates just because.

Adding technology also gave the story a more science fiction feel, though I was careful not to undermine the traditional culture I had created. The Teraburans are no fools. When off-worlders first arrived, they saw the need for defence and the development of more advanced technology. Fortunately, they were able to trade for these things, using their skills with produce and textiles to form partnerships that prevented them being swallowed up by the powerful Esarelians. Now they are the central supplier in the known universe, which means they can live relatively free from interference.

At the end of the day, Discernment is about the people, and no matter where we go and what technology we have, people are the same. We all have dreams, goals, families, cultural values and expectations, and we all want to be seen and accepted for who we are. Discernment, hopefully, deals with that issue. But it’s okay to read it for the space pirates and sekala buns too.

Doesn't this sound amazing?? Now I'm even more excited to get started reading! And Lauren even included a fun recipe for us inspired by the food of Terabu!

In case you want to know more about Discernment, here's the back cover blurb:

In Jiya’s world, the only choice a woman has is who she will marry. When she meets a mysterious off-worlder, she must decide how far she is willing to push the boundaries of Teraburan culture to gain her freedom, and whether that is truly what she wants.

Mahsan has never been accepted for who he is. The sole human raised on an Esarelian cruiser, his attempts to belong led only to disaster and him becoming a fugitive. When he is invited into the home of a Teraburan clan leader, he finds a place where he could finally put down roots. But his past haunts him, and he will need to make peace with it if he wants any kind of future in his new home.

Not everyone approves of Jiya and Mahsan’s friendship, and some will stop at nothing to keep them apart. As the unlikely pair discover their true calling, they will have to confront everything they thought they knew and learn to see themselves as they never have before.

Interview with Laura Frances

We are so excited to welcome Laura Frances to Lands Uncharted today!! Her young adult fantasy novel, Songs in the Night, just released last month, and she took the time to answer some questions for us about herself and her book! Enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Thanks so much for having me! I’m an indie author, homeschooling wife and mom, obsessed thrifter, and, above all, follower of Christ. We travel whenever possible. Laugh a whole lot. And I am by far the most introverted member of my family.

We're so glad you stopped by! What prompted you to start writing? Are you one of those authors who knew you were meant to write since childhood, or did it come as a discovery later in life?

I was that kid in the dollar store buying notebooks and pens instead of toys. I’ve always loved it! I don’t know that I really settled on writing as a career until later though. It might have been closer to high school graduation before the desire really struck. But once I fell, I fell hard!

A writer can never have too many notebooks and pens :) Which authors have had the most significant impact on your writing?

Man, that’s tough. In terms of descriptive, emotive writing…Stephen R. Lawhead. I’m constantly in awe of the way he paints imagery with words. His characters and settings are so alive and vivid. Another is Julianne Donaldson. She writes regency romance, which isn’t really in my wheelhouse, but the way she used memories in Blackmoore to drive the MC’s plight further into the readers’ hearts struck me. I’d always heard that a writer should be careful about too many flashbacks and such things, but her masterful use of them inspired me to try it my own way in the Slave Series. It changed everything.

Ooh, now I'm even more excited to read your Slave series! We’re all about exploring new worlds here at Lands Uncharted—if you could choose one place to visit, real or fictional, where would you go?

Easy. I want to ride a horse across Rohan (after the fall of Mordor, of course…without the risk of orc surprises…). After which, I’d like to rest in Rivendell, where I’ll happen upon an ornate wardrobe. Searching the wardrobe for an elvish dinner gown, I’d very much like to stumble into Narnia. :) I know that’s more than one, but can you blame me??

Haha, with such a clever method of travel between the two, we'll let it slide :) Share one of your favorite writing tips!

Learn everything you can through reading! What works. What doesn’t. Grab used copies of your favorite books and dissect them with a highlighter and pen! Do the same with books you don’t enjoy and figure out why.

Absolutely! Your YA fantasy, Songs in the Night, released on April 3rd! Congratulations!! What inspired you to write it?

Thank you so much! It’s been a long time coming.

The initial inspiration came the first time I listened to "Rescue" by Lauren Daigle, way back when it dropped in 2018. I played it over and over, maybe 30 + times, and a rough storyline of a young girl, unloved and broken, took shape. I wrote what’s now the prologue within a few days. From there, painstakingly, the story grew into what it is now.

Such a powerful song, and what a cool inspiration! Did any of the events in the book surprise you as you were writing?

So many! But then, I am a pantser. I knew important moments and emotional beats I wanted to hit, but I’d say 60% of the story took me by surprise!

Pantsers unite! *high five* Can you give us any insights into your next project?

I’m currently working on the second installment in the Song Giver Series. I can’t say much, but I promise lots of feels, battles, hope, and new characters!

I can't wait!! Thank you so much for visiting today, Laura! And congratulations again on your new release!

Here's a little more about the book:

What would they do if I screamed…if the force of my voice ripped these walls to shreds?

Thirteen years have passed since five-year-old Eris crossed the border into Omaria, finding shelter among a wary band of drifters. But Sithian slaves are branded like cattle, and the scars across her palms serve only to alienate her from the people she once trusted for protection.

After word reaches the forest of a violent Sithian attack in the northern regions, and fearful rumors of sorcery hum on the air, Eris is blamed when a night of violent sickness sweeps through camp.

Forced to flee for her life into unfamiliar land, Eris once again finds herself at the mercy of cruel men. Captured by traders and imprisoned in a cage, she determines to do whatever it takes to protect a fragile, sick woman chained to the bars.

But as they draw close to the border and hope of escape fades, a frightening power rises within Eris, fueled by the bitter grief warring in her heart. The scars across her palms burn, and Eris fears she may be becoming the very thing the king’s knights vow to destroy: a diavok cursed for evil.

Oh man, doesn't it sound intense? And that cover is stunning! You can purchase Songs in the Night HERE, and follow the author on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and her website to hear her latest updates!

Interview with Kendra E. Ardnek (Love and Memory Blog Tour)

We're so excited to welcome Kendra E. Ardnek back to Lands Uncharted today as part of the blog tour celebrating her new release, Love and Memory! (You can find our interview with her from 2018 HERE.) Love and Memory is Book 3 in the Rizkaland Legends and releases TODAY! I'll share more about the book below, but first Kendra took the time to answer some questions for us! Enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hello! I’m the self-proclaimed Arista of Fairy tales, I write books, and in my free time I raise dragons and flip hamburgers at McDonalds. *cough* I am an actual glitter explosion and possibly also a cat, because if you leave a box lying about, I will sit in it.

Ha, I love it! What inspired you to start writing fantasy?

I had a very rough childhood. Nothing that was any one person’s fault, but, especially in the early half of my teens, it really felt like life wouldn’t let up. I turned to fiction and especially fantasy as a place where I could hide and life could make sense, and it naturally led to me writing it as it gave me even greater control of … something.

I'm so glad you found an outlet you can enjoy and share with others! Which fictional character (book or movie) do you most relate to, and why?

As a kid, definitely Ella from Ella Enchanted (book, not the movie). At the moment, I’m not really sure, but she definitely still clicks with me in a way few other characters have.

YES!!! Ella Enchanted has always been one of my favorites, too :) What advice would you share with an aspiring author?

Read. Read. Read.

Write. Write. Write.

Edit. Edit. Edit.

And don’t be in a rush. Success doesn’t come overnight – no one will take your writing seriously if you don’t take it seriously and give it the dignity it deserves.

Absolutely! Love and Memory, Book 3 in the Rizkaland Legends, releases today! Congratulations!! What inspired you to write this series?

I didn’t like the 2005 Narnia movie when it came out and thought I could do better. That’s it. That’s the story.

Plain and simple, I like it! Did any of the events in the book surprise you as you were writing?

Not strictly, but there were definitely a lot of things that went down but weren’t part of the original plan. Such as Wyn. Definitely Wyn. All the hugs for Wyn. Anywho.

Now you have me curious about Wyn! The covers for this series are lovely! What went into the design process?

So, originally, I had a cousin design the covers for the first two books. Now, he was good at photoshop – went to school for it and everything – but he didn’t know cover composition, and so, especially after we had a bit of a hoopla with a watermark on the first cover, I never really felt comfortable with them. Then a then-aspiring cover designer just started sending me fan covers for the series, and I liked each one better than the last until finally I just looked at one and went “That. That’s the look I wish I had for the series.”

Megan was more than thrilled to see her covers on the actual books, and actually refused payment, instead only wanting copies of the books, which I was more than happy to send her. We did a few tweaks (including swapping out the silhouettes on LDTD for the ones I’d done myself for the existing cover), and I relaunched quite successfully.

Now, I had planned to purchase LaM’s cover outright (as she does now charge and she completely deserves it), but I kinda pushed too close to the deadline I needed, she didn’t have time in her schedule, and then she put up her prices (not by much, but my money was tight at that moment.), so I asked if she minded if I did LaM’s cover myself (I’d done most of my other covers, more or less under her tutelage, so I had a basic idea of what went into the first two’s covers), as I also have a very firm idea of what I wanted in my head by that point, and the mocks she had sent me a few years before (immediately upon announcement of the title), were nearly there but not quite it.

It went through a bit of a process, and I learned a few new things along the way, but here we are, and I’m just so much in love with this thing.

I love hearing about how covers develop, and how cool that your cousin and a fan both got to be involved! Can you give us any insights into your next project?

I accidently wrote reverse Frozen and thus realized that Frozen is actually a retelling of Sense and Sensibility, but with a Snow Queen aesthetic and “oops, the guy I kinda like is already engaged” swapped out for “I have ice magic!” as the elder sister’s secret. I mean Elsa/Elinor, Anna/Marianne. Need I say more?

I’m writing a mash up of Sense and Sensibility and Snow White and Rose Red, and it’s due for release in September alongside an unknown quantity of other SWRR retellings. The Frozen parallels weren’t on purpose, and I’m not changing the narrative to either lean in or avoid them (basically, it’s a subtle plotline of “what if Anna had the ice magic, not Elsa”), but I find them hilarious.

Interesting! I've never thought of Frozen that way, but I can totally see it! That sounds like a fantastic mashup! Thank you so much for visiting today!

You can purchase Love and Memory HERE. And here's the back cover blurb:

When a Queen forgets,
Her enemies rejoice in her weakness.
But when the Queen remembers,
They tremble in fear.
When a King loves,
His country rejoices with him.
But when that love is broken.
The land is broken, too.
Can Water and Fire join again?
Can Love and Memory be restored?

They spent years in Rizkaland. They ruled the land, forged friendships, built families, and made it their home. But then it was time to return to Earth, and their former lives just don’t fit anymore. Clara and Andrew struggle to reevaluate their priorities when hundreds of miles separate them. Reuben and Petra are lost as they seek a balance between their old friendship and their Rizkan marriage. And Ashna and Noraeto never planned to return, so what life is there for them on Earth?

When the unthinkable happens and a new enemy arises, they’re all thrown back into Rizkaland, into a young prince’s rise to power and struggle to build alliances for his kingdom. But they no longer belong in their other world, either.

Are good memories too much to bear?

Themes in World Diver by Haylie Hanson (World Diver Book Tour)

We have a special treat for you today! I'm so excited to welcome Haylie Hanson to Lands Uncharted today as part of the World Diver Book Tour! World Diver is a young adult science fantasy releasing on April 20th! I can't wait!! I'll share more about the book and author below, but first Haylie took the time to tell us about the themes in her story. Enjoy!

If you knew your destiny was something greater than yourself, something bigger and scarier than you could possibly imagine, that might involve the ultimate sacrifice with no guarantees your side will come out on top… would you do it anyway?

Would you be the hero of your own story if it mean you had to leave everything you’d ever known forever?

Humans are conditioned to want safety and security, and Callie James, the main character of World Diver, is no exception. As much as I can say I’m a travel-loving, bucket-list-making, extroverted people-person, I like safety, too. I’m not comfortable with the unknown. I’d like to think that if I were confronted with a destiny filled with sentient robots, superpowers, and interdimensional gateways through the multiverse, I’d be totally stoked—ready and willing to take a leap of faith into a brand new adventure. But in reality, I’d be just as terrified as Callie, and probably even more reluctant than she is to believe I’m anything worthy or important.

One of the themes I wanted to explore when writing World Diver was the idea of being stuck in our fears, and what we’d be willing to sacrifice after learning our true purpose. Callie is pretty happy being stuck—she knows she’s not meant to be a slacker forever, but she has no idea what she might be meant to do besides surf with her best friend and avoid the “college talk” with her overbearing dad. Her natural reaction is to stick her head in the sand and hide rather than confront what makes her afraid. When destiny calls, Callie doesn’t immediately leap into action. She hides, and tries to get rid of the problem by throwing away an opportunity because it comes with a potential cost, choosing comfort and complacency over facing her fears.

Granted, murder-phantoms from another realm haunting your bedroom and stalking you across town are enough to make anybody pretty fearful. Who wants to actually face that, right?

And yet, no matter how much Callie tries to hide, she comes to learn (in a really big, superpowers-and-multiverse-piloting way) that fear and avoidance in the face of truth are never the solution. They just make our problems worse. When she’s finally asked to make the choice to do the right thing or hide forever—to choose the life she wants for herself—Callie stands up to her fear and chooses to be brave, even though she desperately doesn’t want to. After all, she might fail: her biggest fear of all. But even still, she takes the leap.

And in the end, it costs her. Boy, does it cost her big. But if she had to do it all over again… there’s no question she’d choose the same path. Every. Single. Time.

I hope in Callie readers can find a kindred spirit. She might start out as a girl who feels like a disappointment and a failure because she’s too afraid to take a risk, a walking self-fulfilling prophesy. But she learns that what makes her unique is nothing to be afraid of. To embrace her gifts—her quirkiness, her wit, and her great big heart, even if it might break. To look destiny in the eye and say “bring it on.” To dive into adventure, with no guarantee of what’s waiting on the other side of tomorrow.

To always seek the Light, even in the Darkest places.

Eeeep, this sounds SO GOOD! Want to know more? Here's the back cover blurb:

College, grades, extracurriculars--who cares? Sixteen-year-old slacker Callie James would rather make robot creations and surf waves with her best friend Will. Then she discovers a mysterious glowing rod under the ocean surface, and her entire world turns upside down.

One, her hands start glowing (weird). Two, she can now control people (awkward). Three, she accidentally brings her robotics project to life. Classes were hard enough without her robot Nemo literally eating her homework.

Only the reclusive Dr. Ormandi knows the truth: Callie is a Luminaut (aka a light wizard) and it’s her destiny to reunite the shattered multiverse by collecting all the Light Cores (aka the glowstick of doom) in all the other worlds. To do this, she must repair the World Diver, the fifty-foot tall robot lurking in Dr. Ormandi’s basement hangar.

As Callie learns about her Luminaut powers, Nate crash lands into her life. He’s hot. Funny. Crazy about her. One problem: he’s technically dead. Oh, and he insists uniting the multiverse will destroy everything.

Pursued by murderous interdimensional phantoms and plagued by insecurities, Callie must protect her family and friends, while figuring out who to trust.

And all before a deadly, looming evil snuffs out her Light for good.

Interview with Angela R. Watts

We're so excited to welcome Angela R. Watts to Lands Uncharted today! Her YA fantasy, Golgotha, comes out this Saturday, April 10th! I'll share more about her new release below, but first, Angela took the time to answer some questions for us. Enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Angela, the bestselling author of The Infidel Books (endorsed by NYT and USA Today bestseller Lt Col Rip Rawlings and The Real Book Spy). I enjoy spending time with my family, raising pets, and sniffing books.

Ah, nothing beats the smell of books :) What prompted you to start writing? Are you one of those authors who knew you were meant to write since childhood, or did it come as a discovery later in life?

I started telling stories when I was super young. At six, I narrated a story with my mom writing it out, and then illustrated it. That was my first real book (guys, it had a climax and everything… ha!) and I never looked back as God led me to write story after story. The glory goes to the Lord, none of this would have been possible without Him!

How cool that you got started at such a young age! Which fictional character (book or movie) do you most relate to, and why?

The funny answer would be the hermit romance novelist from Romancing The Stone, but if I’m being real, I’ve related immensely to Mitch Rapp, the assassin from the Rapp series. No, I’m not an assassin, and I’ve not faced what he has. But I often find myself feeling alone, and like I’m the only one willing to face the darkness for a fight. The Rapp novels have inspired me in my personal and writing journey.

I love that inspiration can be found in surprising places! We’re all about exploring new worlds here at Lands Uncharted—if you could choose one place to visit, real or fictional, where would you go?

I want to travel the world, as typical as it sounds. I’d much prefer traveling our world than any fictional place, simply because all fiction is inspired by something, and God created such a vast world… A world I’ve barely had the honor of exploring! I think I would like to visit Scotland, no particular town or shore.

Ooh, great choice! What advice would you share with an aspiring author?

Write without looking around or looking back. Comparison will likely do nothing more than slow you down. And it is better to cringe at old writing than never have finished a project at all.

Absolutely! What a great perspective. Your YA fantasy, Golgotha, releases on April 10th! Congratulations!! What inspired you to write it?

Thank you so much!

Growing up, I read a lot of fantasy, but never finished a fantasy novel. As I dove into the world of Biblical research and supernatural warfare, I looked at an old story idea I had tossed aside… The rest is history.

I'm so glad it finally worked out! Did any of the events in the book surprise you as you were writing?

Yes. Most of them, in fact!

I wrote Golgotha about three times before I was happy with the outcome, and from there, it continued to grow and change. This is a novel that was truly led by God. I would have moments where I didn’t know what I had written or where a plot point was going until God opened my eyes and I went, “Ooooh!”

So much of this novel is constant surprises and lessons God taught me as I wrote them. I am not a punster and do follow rough outlines, so it is always incredible to see God carve and mold my novels.

It's truly amazing to be able to use your creativity alongside the Creator. Can you give us any insights into your next project?

My next confirmed publications are The Mercenary’s Deception, The Infidel Books 3 (July 2021) and Finding God in Anime: A Devotional for Otakus (spring 2021). I might also have a thing or two in store, but you’ll have to follow me for the extra surprises!

My current work-in-progress is the second installment of the Remnant Trilogy! If you enjoy Golgotha, no worries… there is more to come!

Good to hear! We'll stay tuned :) In the meantime, here's the back cover blurb for Golgotha:

Four unlikely companions must band together to escape the Realm of Bones and save their kingdom from a reign of darkness.

Prince Moray will lead his empire to glory, even if it means dabbling with forbidden black magic. But when their parents are murdered, Moray and his brother, Finnigan, are cast into Golgotha—a realm where hope is dead. Finnigan fiercely believes his god, Elohai, will rescue them, but Moray will never trust again.

Princess Ama, promised in marriage to Moray to ensure her clan’s safety from rival tribes, arrives just before a coup and becomes trapped in Golgotha with the smart-mouthed mercenary, Gunnar. Surrounded by strange monsters and ravenous demons, Ama must fight to hold on to her faith—or lose everything.

Despite Ama’s Gift of prophetic dreams, Finnigan’s Gift of energy, Moray’s magic, and Gunnar’s blades, nothing can rescue them from themselves. If they fail to escape, darkness will devour the entire kingdom.

Shadow and Bone meets Mark of the Raven in this epic for fans of faith-based young adult fantasy.

Doesn't it sound fantastic? You can pre-order Golgotha HERE. And make sure to check out Angela's website to find out more about her and her other books! Thanks so much for visiting today, Angela, and congratulations on your upcoming release!

Lament Character Spotlights by Laura L. Zimmerman (Lament Blog Tour)

We are thrilled to welcome Laura L. Zimmerman to Lands Uncharted today as part of the blog tour celebrating her upcoming new release, Lament! We featured Book One in Laura's Banshee Song Series, Keen, in a review and behind-the-scenes post, and now we're excited to share character spotlights from Lament! I'll share more about the book below, but for now, here's Laura!

In the second book of the Banshee Song Series, Caoine unexpectedly travels to the Unseelie Realm. This opens the door to a whole new cast of characters! While we still get to see a few favorites from Keen, Lament welcomes you to the land of the fae. Let’s get to know a few of the characters!

Aibell: This tough-as-nails faerie is one of the first Caoine will be introduced to once she arrives in the Unseelie Realm. Aibell is wicked with a bow and arrow and just as talented with a sword. The secret to her skill at weaponry lies with a story from her past. How is she connected to King Raghnall and why does she look so familiar to Caoine?

Laoise: (LEE sha) This girl is no ordinary wisp. Laoise stands a solid six feet tall but is always quick to offer a gentle smile. Her silver eyes glow with radiance, making her appear partially transparent. That is, when she’s not changing into a ball of light to zip away and confuse even the most observant. Her closest friend is Killian but she finds a special connection to Caoine that makes her especially protective.

Killian: A tall Light Elf, Killian is technically from the Seelie Realm. He’s downright dangerous with a bow and arrow, and Caoine is thankful he’s on her side, when it comes to helping her escape the Unseelie. His formal elegance often makes him appear as if he’s standing perfectly still, giving off an air of royalty. But what are his roots and why does he prefer to reside in the Winter Realm when it’s not his real home?

Gar: He’s short, he’s a goblin, and he’s always a bit of a grump! His name means “god spear”, which makes sense since he’s oddly good with the spear―beyond good. In fact, he never misses his mark. He looks like a child, if said child could grow a mass of hair with deep wrinkles that reflected a life of worry. Although he doesn’t exactly trust Caoine, he’s committed enough to help her on her journey, even if he never cracks a smile.

Nym: This little man quickly becomes one of Caoine’s closest companions. As a faen, he shouldn’t desire to be around other fae, or a half-human for that matter. But his loyalty is strong and he’d certainly never tell a lie, even if he could. He often disappears without any notice but he somehow appears at just the right time. Caoine learns to keep this odd guy close, especially when she isn’t sure who can be trusted.

Of course, we’ll meet a few more friends along the way, including a surprise character that remains a secret for now. (Shhh!) And our old favorites will be there for you, too!

Thanks for meeting my friends of Lament. I’d love to hear which character is your favorite!

Eeep, I started this book earlier this week and now I'm even more eager to keep reading!! Lament releases on January 26th and can be pre-ordered through Amazon (paperback and e-book) or Barnes & Noble (and after you've pre-ordered, make sure to go HERE to fill out the form for some amazing pre-order swag!) Here's a little more about the book:

Half-fae banshee, Caoine, is devastated by the loss of her father, and graduation is just around the corner. Ignorant of an old enemy seeking revenge, she is whisked away to the Unseelie Realm where she learns someone dear to her is being held captive. She vows not to go home until he's free.

Then she finds out she's trapped, unable to return to the human realm.

In order to go home, she must set aside old prejudices and work with a nemesis to survive faerie tricks and fae creatures hungry for human blood. Only then will she discover the secret to her escape and her loved one's freedom.

Aided by an unlikely band of fae, she uncovers more about her banshee powers than she dreamed possible, even as the fae remind her just how human she really is.

She'll take the drama of high school over the pettiness of the fae any day.

Make sure to stop by the Online Release Party for Lament next Thursday, January 28th, and check out the other stops on the blog tour (find the full tour schedule HERE)! Thank you so much for visiting today, Laura, and congratulations on your new release!!

Interview with Sharon Rose

We're thrilled to welcome Sharon Rose to Lands Uncharted today to celebrate her new book! A Castle Awakened is the first novel in her Castle in the Wilde series and just released on December 23rd! I'll share more about A Castle Awakened below, but first the author took the time to answer some questions for us - enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a word-nerd who finds people to be endlessly fascinating. I’m intrigued by personality, culture, and all the ways we communicate—or fail to communicate. Much as I love people, I prefer to enjoy them in small groups, preferably in a coffee shop or a garden.

What prompted you to start writing? Are you one of those authors who knew you were meant to write since childhood, or did it come as a discovery later in life?

I suppose I should have known early. After all, I wrote my first story when I was seven. The spelling was atrocious, but the story was a hit in my second-grade classroom.

Stories have always revolved within me, but that was viewed as daydreaming. I got a real job instead. In my mid-thirties I decided to make my vague dream a reality and write a novel. I did finish that saga, but I also learned that successful publishing would consume way more time than I had available. Writing remained a hobby.

In 2016, I was blessed to be able to leave my familiar career and focus on what I loved—writing fiction. Finally, I can sell my daydreams.

Sell your daydreams! I love that :) You write both fantasy and science fiction! What are the most fun and challenging aspects of each?

Creating people and worlds is loads of fun. (I suspect God agrees.) Delving into make-believe settings and people allows us to step back from problems and see them in a different light. I think that helps us find new solutions and inspires change. That is deeply satisfying to me.

The challenging part of writing in these genres is to make it believable. That is especially true in science fiction, where the setting needs to seem scientifically plausible while it is also bizarre or unfamiliar. Getting that across to a reader, without weighing down the story, is difficult.

What a great perspective on world-building! We’re all about exploring new worlds here at Lands Uncharted—if you could choose one place to visit, real or fictional, where would you go?

Eden. Yes, time travel back to the original garden. I would like my stories to point people (including me) to what we truly ought to be. Eden was a place where evil needed to be kept out, where daily work needed to be done, and where humankind walked with God in the cool of the day. I would love to see that and write about it.

That would be amazing!! What advice would you share with an aspiring author?

· Value your hobby writing and early attempts. They are crucial practice.

· Learn the skills of this craft, but do not let rules tie your writing in knots.

· Go to conferences, local writer groups, or any place where you can find some writer friends. You need friends who speak your language.

Congratulations on your new release, A Castle Awakened! What inspired you to write it?

Thank you! There is just something about release day. My cheeks hurt from all the smiling.

The story grew out of the human tendency to focus so much on what is wrong that we don’t see or make use of all that is good. These characters need to overcome challenges within the constraints of their cultures, despite the flaws they cannot fix. Perfect culture is a myth. Succeed anyway.

Ooh, now I'm even more excited to read it! Did any of the events in the book surprise you as you were writing?

This always happens. Thomas is a minor character in the first novel of the trilogy. I only intended him to reveal how awful things are in Tower Woods. The next thing I know, that impoverished, hunted seventeen-year-old stands up with as much strength of character as noble Tristan. Thomas has more to say in novel two, and novel three will be his story.

I love it when characters take on a life of their own! Can you give us any insights into your next project?

I’m currently editing A Castle Contended, which is novel 2 of the Castle in the Wilde trilogy. This one is Beth’s story. She gets past her fine self, which allows her to play a much bigger role in her own life than she ever thought possible. Of course, some of her peers infinitely prefer her in the role of pawn. All the more reason to get that foreign usurper out of the way.

I also have a prequel novella, A Castle Sealed, releasing next month. It tells the story of how Tristan, Cotrell and James discovered the castle—and vixicats. Close call there.

Sounds exciting! Thank you so much for visiting us today, and congratulations again on your new release!! Here's the back cover blurb for A Castle Awakened:

A foreign usurper. A lady who longs for freedom. Vicious beasts who want to rip them all to shreds. Who wins?

Never one to shy from a challenge, Lord Tristan Petram took possession of a forsaken castle. His search uncovered no hint of who built it or why they abandoned such a gem. What treachery would strike the founding family from history? Still, it seems a small matter, since the generations have passed. If he and his followers can forge a life here—and hold out against ravenous vixicats—the castle and this land will be theirs. As for the nearest kingdom, they never venture beyond their border or the mysterious forest of tower trees. Except...

Beth dons a disguise and takes a forbidden ride in Tower Woods—a last fling before she bows to the dictates of her noble birth. Her fun adventure turns into a nightmare of kidnap and rescue—of sorts. Now she’s trapped in a nameless castle held by a foreign usurper who calls himself Lord Petram. Who could he be, and what will he do with her if he finds out who she really is?

Thus, Lord Petram finds himself the unwilling guardian of an injured lady who won’t give her full name. A crime he didn’t commit may bring retribution from an unknown kingdom. Do they have a claim to this castle that he now calls home? If he survives the vixicats, will an army slaughter him and his followers?

A Castle Awakened is the first novel in the Castle in the Wilde trilogy. If you like fantasy with mystery, intrigue, and romance, come and explore this secondary world with medieval undertones and the turmoil of clashing cultures.

You can find A Castle Awakened on Amazon. Learn more about Sharon Rose and her books on her website, BookBub, Amazon, Goodreads, and Facebook!

Story Snippets: The Wolf Queen by Special Guest Tabitha Caplinger

We're thrilled to welcome Tabitha Caplinger back to Lands Uncharted! (Tabitha joined us for an interview back in 2018, and we featured her fun, intense, snarky series about demon hunters, The Chronicle of the Three, in this Book Spotlight.) Today, Tabitha is sharing a Story Snippet from her upcoming new release, The Wolf Queen, which comes out in January, 2021!

Eeeep, I can't wait! But instead of going on about it myself, here's Tabitha!

HI! I am so excited to share a snippet of The Wolf Queen with you all. Here’s the synopsis to give you a little context.

Ylva was raised by wolves. That is the story her clan tells of their Wolf Queen. The truth is far more miraculous. Her Gift, bestowed by the Light, enables her to see deep inside the hearts of men.

Prince Rohan considers the Light mere superstition and only believes in what he can see with his own eyes.

But a great evil is infecting the Four Realms. The battle between the Light and the Darkness is no longer bound to human hearts, and words Ylva and Rohan thought were just legend are being whispered again. The dragon is rising.

Here is Chapter Three.

***

“What do you mean?” Ylva asked Håkon. “Do you know what the man spoke of?”

“Aye, it is said there would come a time when the Darkness would rise and it would overcome all men. It will take the High Mountain and be the destruction of us all.” The old man spoke the words with such confidence, as though he had already seen it happen.

Ylva stood up and paced the dirt floor. “You talk of myths and legends. There is nothing on that mountain but ruins.”

“It is not what is on the mountain, but what lies beneath it,” Håkon sighed.

“You don’t really believe that to be true?” Ylva asked incredulously. She had heard him speak of the dragon who slept beneath the mountain a hundred times before. While Håkon based much of his storytelling upon their clan’s history, Ylva knew that this account was not one to be believed. Maybe the myth held the slightest thread of truth, but Ylva had assumed its main purpose came in teaching children what is right and good through means of fable. Yet now he continued rambling into the fire about the mountain and its dragon like it was more, like it was prophecy.

“Do not think me a lunatic, Ylva…” the old man began but was cut off by Erland bursting through the door.

“I am sorry, but there is someone here who says he must speak with you,” Erland said. “He claims it is urgent.”

“At this hour?” Ylva asked. She did not give time for Erland to respond but simply added, “It’s fine, I will meet him.” She turned to Håkon and asked, “Join us?” The old man nodded and they followed Erland outside.

They walked through the village toward the western gate. An Ibharüng guard stood watch at the entrance, a lit torch in hand. Erland held another—the flicker of the two lights now cast a glow upon three figures previously camouflaged by the darkness. Their steeds stood nearby, the horses’ breath visibly escaping as foggy tendrils into the frigid night air.

“I am Ylva, leader of this clan. To whom am I speaking?” she asked.

One of the figures stepped closer, coming into clearer view. His pallid skin and hair looked to be covered in ash and blood. “I am Dagr, of the Fell,” he said and then bowed his head. “We come seeking shelter.”

“You have come a very long way. Why? Shelter from what?” Ylva asked. There were at least three other clans residing in the territory between her clan and the Fell. While no current dispute existed between them, her uncle’s deceit had caused a long-lasting tension.

“Our clan came under attack two days ago,” Dagr answered. “They came at twilight with no warning and no reason except to destroy everything and kill everyone.”

“Who?” Ylva asked.

“We do not know—they bore no clan markings. We don't believe them to be from the Northlands,” Dagr replied. “We came here because we know you to be virtuous and just. We know that you can be trusted and would not simply cast us out.”

“If your village was attacked, why are you not helping the survivors? Have they sent you to find a place for them all? To ask me to bear the burden of your entire clan?” Ylva asked only a few of the questions running through her mind. It bothered her to consider that an injured people were left without help. She herself would not have left them out in the cold. At the same time, she would not extend the Ibharüng's help simply because the Fell may believe Ylva’s people owed service to them. No—her clan’s debt had been paid years ago.

“We are the survivors,” another of the Fell said as she stepped forward, a shield maiden with long hair stained with the same blood and ash as her comrade, “the only survivors.”

“This is Solveig, my sister,” Dagr said, “and this is Bjorn.” He gestured to the third Fell, a young man of ruddy appearance.

Bjorn looked terrified as blood actively dripped down his arm. “We are all that is left of the Fell. No other man, woman, or child remains alive. All that remains of our village is soot and smoke.”

“Why would someone do such a thing?” Erland wondered aloud. “This goes beyond the rules of war.” Erland had fought by Ylva’s side since she was a girl. He usually spoke very little. While typically calm and steadfast, worry now wrinkled his brow.

“There was no rule to it, no law guiding it. It was pure evil wearing men’s skin.” Solveig’s voice trembled as she spoke, tears streaking her face.

“What do you mean?” Håkon asked, now stepping into the conversation to which he had just been a silent bystander up to this point.

“They were unnatural, the men who attacked us. Their eyes were the color of storm clouds, their veins black. Each possessed the strength of ten men,” Bjorn replied. His voice cracked with each word.

Dagr placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “They were inhuman. It was like they were from another world.”

Ylva sighed. “We will give you shelter. Erland will see to it. But be careful not to make monsters out of mortals. It will only incite more fear,” she said. She looked to Erland who nodded his compliance and began to lead the three Fell survivors into the village.

“Sometimes mortals become monsters,” Håkon scolded her quietly once the others left earshot. “There is more at work here than the hands of men. Do you really have such a hard time believing that?”

“I believe in the Darkness, but this…this is…” Ylva was finding it difficult to wrap her mind around such a thing.

“This is the Darkness growing stronger,” the elder interrupted. “Just as Lys can bestow gifts of power on his beloved, Myrkr can also give a form of power that is really a curse. The former acts to bless and strengthen while the latter only seeks to take. You of all people should understand there is more at play here than just the natural. Think of your own gift… your Sight.”

Håkon was right. Ylva knew it. Lys had given her a gift—one that could not be explained. Some even doubted it, but she knew it to be as real as anything she could touch with her hands. What Dagr had seen, the darkness taking over a man's heart, was what she saw every time she used her Sight. But she had never known it to break the surface of a man’s flesh to become visible by all. She couldn’t fathom a darkness growing so strong in a man’s heart that it would breech his form and will completely.

This all meant more than Ylva was prepared to accept. The dying man, the elder’s stories, and now the catastrophe upon the Fell…the Darkness must be growing. This attack perhaps marked only the beginning. “What do we do?” she asked.

“We send a falcon to the North Keep,” Håkon instructed. “The dragon is rising.” It was the second time Ylva had heard those words. It was the second time they caused her body to shiver and draw bumps across her pale skin. For most of her life, Håkon told tales of Myrkr and Lys. He spoke of imprisoning the Darkness generations ago and of a time when it would once again come to reign. He recited prognostications of The Priestess turning the hearts of men and her dragon devouring those who would not yield. Did she not believe him? It is easy to believe what we can see and experience, but it is harder to bear faith in the things unseen—the things that defy rational thought. Believing solely in her gift, what she could see, was simply not enough anymore. She must decide: embrace the stories told by the elders or find another option. She could no longer avoid thinking about from where her gift came and the implications therein. If Håkon was right, if his stories were actually coming to pass, she must broaden her belief. Ylva wanted to believe fully in Lys; that Lys could be trusted both with what can be understood and what cannot. The war between the Light and the Darkness breeched the surface of their world and so her faith must go beyond the shallows. Her heart had to be ready.
