BOOK vs. NOOK

It's the BOOK in one corner of the ring and the NOOK in the other.

(Or Kindle...)

Personally, I am a die-hard fan of the traditional soft or hardback--with a cover and pages that you can cradle like a baby in your arms (or at least your hands), that you can fall asleep almost comfortably on if you stay up too late reading, and that you can feel between your fingers as you hungrily turn the pages in front of your nose.

Though I am grateful for the computer's many conveniences and the accessibility of ebooks for mass readership, when it comes to what I love, convenience is no matter. My heart stands strongly behind the ink and paper.

But that's only one side of the fight.

So...BOOK or NOOK? Which do you prefer?

Laura

  1. BOOK! I don't use e-readers unless there is no other option. I am absolutely on team book. Of course, that may just be because I'm an old fashioned girl in almost all areas, but still... there is just something special about having a real book. I love that I can flip to my favorite spot, read it, and put the book back on the shelf. I love the feeling of watching the pages left until the end get fewer and fewer. I love that I never have to plug them in to recharge. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. I love real books, and I do not want e-readers to take over the world like most people think they are going to. At least if that happens, I don't want to be alive to see it happen. :) Sorry to ramble, but I feel very strongly on this subject. Can my vote count as two votes for team book? :)

  2. Book for sure. I do like my Kindle, but I only go to it when my paperback pile runs out. :)

  3. Yes, book for me as well. There is something so personal about the curling cover and wrinkled pages and sweat stains and other marks. And like Brenna said, it is much easier to navigate books than nooks, kindles, or other electronic devices. Besides, I love being able to decorate my room with shelves and stacks of my favorite books. :)

    1. I love decorating with them, too, Hannah! It’s bad, I don’t want to get rid of them, so they just keep piling up and I have to buy more book shelves. :) I love it though.

  4. I love my Kindle, I have to say. Gone are the days of wandering around my house wishing I had something new to read, or being frustrated with limited library hours. My first book on Kindle was the first Hunger Games. The second quickly followed, but is a terrible cliff-hanger! I was able to download and start the third book only minutes after finishing the second book! It was 2 a.m. over Christmas Break, and I didn't have to go to bed wondering, worrying or stressed. (Granted, I stayed up way too late, but my kiddos didn't mind a pajama day the next day!) That said, there are books I read on Kindle and have to then buy in hardcover or paperback because I loved them so much I need a hard copy. . . and nothing quite beats the smell of book mold or the feel of soft paper. But, overall, I am happy for my Kindle! Oh. . . did I mention it comes in handy when traveling and my husband says we can each have one carry-on and no checked luggage--for a week's worth of clothes, toiletries, etc. . .? My Kindle takes up less room than my favorite t-shirt!

  5. Great question, Laura, this is a tough one! I think if I absolutely had to pick I would have to go with book, because I like seeing how far I am and getting to touch the beautiful covers, but I agree with Erin's points about the practicality of e-readers. I have also benefited from being able to download the next book in a series almost instantaneously rather than having to wait to get a hold of a paper copy. Plus the low cost allows me to purchase more reading material than I otherwise would, and the fact that I don't have to hold on to my e-reader means I can read while doing things like drying dishes or folding laundry. So I guess I appreciate the value of both :)

    1. I love feeling the covers and seeing how far I am in the book, too! That’s good you can appreciate both. I have a feeling many people feel this way. I, personally, don’t own a Kindle, and am just stubborn and don’t want to try it. :)

  6. Book!!!!!!!! I agree completely with you. I also love how books smell. For some reason, books just have a completely different feel than electronics. In a book, you can totally immerse yourself in the book itself, along with the story. In an electronic, it feels like there's a glass screen in between you and the story. Also, each book has character. Even if you get two of the exact same editions of a book, each is going to be different. There's just something about books that makes them so much more amazing than electronics.

By the way, I really don't mean to offend anyone; I'm just sharing my thoughts.

    1. The smell of books is one of my favorite things about them! I can’t get myself into electronics and what feels to me like a loss of the personal touch. Great point about the character of each book, too. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Spruce!
