Top 3 Fantasy Hairdos (Elizabeth)

I love fabulously designed hair. And in fantasy, there are so many hairstyles to choose from! Here are my top 3 Fantasy Hairdos:

3. Thror’s Beard (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 2012)

While beards often aren’t mentioned when people are discussing “hairdos,” they still count! Which is why I chose Thror’s bejeweled and braided beard as my third favorite. While I would never be able to pull this off (mainly because I’m beardless), I still have to admire how his beard supports so many pieces of metal. ;)

2. Eowyn’s Bun (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 2002)

While we mostly see Eowyn with her flaxen tresses floating on the breeze, she did have her hair pulled back for Théodred’s funeral into a pretty braid bun. This is my second favorite hairstyle, because of its elegance.

1. Tauriel’s Hair (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 2013)

I’d never be able to leave my hair hanging loose if it were that long, but somehow Tauriel manages to be the captain of the Elven guard and have long, beautiful hair. I love how the top half is pulled back in braids, while the rest of her flaming hair falls past her waist.

If you could style your hair anyway you wanted to—regardless of skill level ;)—how would you style it? What are some of your favorite fantasy hairdos? Are there any fantasy hair don’ts that you’d like to share?

Thank you for reading!

  1. : ) What a fun post! My girls both have hair well below their waists and it is fun for them to fix their hair before the Renaissance Festival each year! I will have to check out more fun hair. . . I like the beard addition, too! : ) Erin

  2. This is an awesome post, Liz! This is not a fantasy book or movie, but I love Meg Ryan's hair styles in Sleepless in Seattle. They would look really cool in a fantasy story too.

Erin, I bet your daughters' hair is so fun to do for the Renaissance Festival!

  3. I guess this isn't exactly fantasy, but I love Leia's hairstyle when they are on Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back. The top half of her hair is in a bun, and the bottom half is in two braids formed into loops.

The Disney version of Rapunzel also comes to mind. While I love the braid she wears during I See the Light, I like her hair best when it's loose (before Eugene cuts it.) It's not only gorgeous, but it's also useful and fun. :)

    1. I love that hairstyle too! And I like her hair before Eugene cuts it as well ;) Sometimes, I wish he'd cut it longer, but I suppose he wasn't too worried about appearance when he was trying to save her...

      Thanks for the comment, Brenna!

  4. Fun idea, Liz! I tend to like Regency-type hairstyles, many of which I think would fit well in a fantasy world. Tauriel's braids are so pretty, and I love that you included a beard :) I generally stick with curly updos when I want my hair to look fancy since I don't even need to curl it!

    1. I love Regency too :) Tamara Leigh, a favorite author of mine, has book covers with gorgeous hairstyles. Thanks! Glad you liked it ;) I suppose that's one of the advantages to having curly hair. :)
