Conquering the TBR Mountain (Laurie)

I always have to laugh whenever someone makes a reference to their TBR pile. Because if the books accumulating on my Kindle, plus the books I want to read but haven't acquired yet, all materialized in my house, I'm positive a simple pile wouldn't suffice. More like a mountain. And it grows every day! Just this past Tuesday, five of my author friends / acquaintances released new books. FIVE! I really wish the mountain visual were an exaggeration...

Most of my reading these days has some kind of deadline attached. The author is expecting feedback, I'm writing an endorsement, I'm supposed to review by a certain date, or I want to be able to participate in a book club discussion or other event. But once in a while, I catch up on my "scheduled" reading and take a peek down at the precarious book mountain I'm perched on. Where do I even start??

Which leads to my question for YOU for today! If you have a towering TBR pile (or a mountain like me!), how do you decide which book to read next? Is it based on a library due date, what a friend is reading, or is there something about the book itself that causes it to rise to the top? And if you have any other strategies for conquering your TBR mountain, please share!

Thanks for reading!
Laurie

  1. Totally understand! There’s so many great books out there. For me, strongest need and desire to read in that moment wins out unless there is one I have agreed to read within a certain amount of time. However, right now, mine is limited to what’s on hand (we had books mailed to my parent’s house 2.5 hours away while we were in transition and others are buried in boxes).

    1. I agree, sometimes a certain mood hits, which causes me to pick up a certain book. I hope you're able to get more books unpacked soon!

  2. My first choice are ones which have deadlines, then library books (which have "deadlines" that can be renewed:-)), then books that friends have recommended. If none of those requirements have been fulfilled, then I check out the two towering piles in my bedroom. There are a few I can't wait to start so recently I made a list of which ones I'll read next. Now I have to go and read the book I started this afternoon (I'll Be Your Blue Sky by Marisa de los Santos -- a recommended read).

    1. That's a good idea to make a list! I can always remember which books I should be reading next while I'm in the middle of something, then I finish and I have no idea where to start :)

  3. If a book comes out in a series I like, it gets moved to the top. Since I get all my books on Kindle, I fortunately don't have to worry about due dates:)

    1. Ooh, yes! Books in a series tend to get moved to the top for me, too.

  4. I usually read the blurbs and put them in a pile of most interesting to least but that doesn't work with my kindle. There aren't any blurbs. You have to go search up the book on amazon to read the blurb and usually I grab tons on a sale and have no idea what a book is about. I thought it was rather silly of kindle not to allow people to see the metadata attached to each book which includes the blurb. It feels like the people who designed kindle weren't the kind of readers we are who can chow through hundreds of books in a year.

    1. I agree, it would be nice to be able to see blurbs on Kindle! I pick up some free books too, and sometimes can't remember why I was interested when I scroll back through. Thanks for stopping by!
