How Forgiveness Heals Even Books! by Special Guest Brianna Tibbetts (Head Over Tails Blog Tour)

We are thrilled to welcome Brianna Tibbetts to Lands Uncharted today as part of the blog tour celebrating her upcoming new release, Head Over Tails! I'll share more about the book and other stops on the tour below, but first, I'll let Brianna share about the theme of forgiveness in her story.

How Forgiveness Heals Even Books!

From the very first draft of Head Over Tails, the character of Jacob had a strong relationship with his father. In the majority of the early drafts, if Jacob’s mother was mentioned at all, it was implied the two didn’t speak. The longer I worked on the story, the more detailed the rift between Jacob and his mother grew. Eventually, I could tell you all of the reasons Jacob was mad at her, all the reasons she’d made the choices she had, and exactly how Jacob’s father felt about all of it.

Despite this, Jacob’s mother wasn’t actually in the book. As recently as 2019, Meredith Pearson was a fully formed character I knew almost everything about, and yet she’d never stepped onto the actual pages of the story. That summer, I had an epiphany about the structure of the book. I was going to rewrite the whole thing. Again.

As I started to plan that rewrite, I realized something important was missing. Jacob’s character arc involved a lot of self-reflection. In order for the changes in his worldview to feel believable by the end of the book, he was going to have to confront all of his issues, not just the most plot relevant ones. And that meant it was time for Meredith to finally show up.

Jacob’s journey to forgive his mother, and in return being forgiven by her, was the lynchpin to his arc. Once Meredith was an actual piece of the narrative, every other part of Jacob’s development was more believable. Until that rewrite, I hadn’t understood that she was such a necessary piece of the story Head Over Tails was telling.

Choosing to forgive is difficult, but powerful. As soon as I added Jacob’s reconciliation with his mother into the book, his arc was so much stronger. The journey I’d had him on hadn’t started at chapter one. Instead, it had begun a year earlier, during a shouting match with his mother. Parts of that groundwork already existed in the book, but only as they related to Jacob’s fear. In order to work through his fear and face it, Jacob needed to also let go of the resentment, frustration, and anger too. Forgiveness was the missing ingredient.

It was natural to include forgiveness in Jacob’s arc, because its importance is a large part of my own personal worldview. I had good people in my life growing up who helped me understand that resentment is corrosive. That meant I knew firsthand the power forgiveness had in the real world. Discovering it could heal Head Over Tails too and make it stronger was incredible. I hope Jacob’s character arc speaks to readers, and that anyone who struggles with any of the same things may find encouragement in his journey.

What a beautiful, powerful message, Brianna! Thank you so much for sharing with us today! Now I'm even more excited to read the book :) Speaking of which, here's the back cover blurb for Head Over Tails:

Mermaids meet mental health in this light-hearted story of life, love, and learning to grow into who you were meant to be.

Their love is true...but is it real?

Fear of inheriting his father’s hallucinations and memory loss have brought Jacob’s life to a screeching halt at age nineteen. Now he spends his days alone on the beach behind his home, staring into the endless Hawaiian waves.

Mermaid Sevencea is eager to explore life above the water—and cheer up the handsome, lonely young man strolling on the shores. Forming a bond with him is as natural as swimming. All she needs are legs to walk beside him, so Sevencea disappears to trade for the necessary magic.

Yet when she returns, Jacob is gone, convinced she was a hallucination after all.
And the more Sevencea searches for him, the more she doubts what they have will last.

Can love truly exist between land and sea?

A sweet YA mermaid-meets-human romance set within the lovely vistas of Hawaii.

Weekend Reads: Azriel by Lee James (Laurie)

Friends! I am SO excited to be a part of the Azriel Blog Tour today!!! As soon as I heard about Azriel by my pub sister Lee James, I absolutely had to know more (and I know I'm probably biased, but the acquisitions editor at Love2ReadLove2Write Publishing has a knack for finding fantastic stories, so I knew this one would be good!)! Then I saw that cover - WOW!! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to read an advance copy of this beauty to provide an endorsement, and let me tell you, the inside is every bit as epic as the cover promises. And now I can't wait to share about it with you!

Bree Faro has always lived as an outcast, fighting for her survival with no one to trust. When she rescues a man from a strange imprisonment, she finds herself unexpectedly drawn to his home city of Azriel. Even more puzzling, his comrades who call themselves Watchmen welcome Bree as a long-lost sister. Bree knows they would reject her if they found out the real reason for her presence in Azriel, but she can't quite squelch her longing to become one of them. As the layers of her past and identity unravel and the dangers threatening Azriel escalate, Bree can no longer avoid decisions about what side she's fighting on and who she wants to become. This loner may have finally found her home and family...if she can save them all from destruction.

Okay, so that overview wasn't as specific as I'd like, but there was just SO MUCH happening in this book and I don't want to risk giving away any spoilers! Because you really just need to experience it for yourself. First of all, Bree was such an epic heroine! I sometimes have trouble relating to rough-around-the-edges, warrior-type protagonists, but Bree had just enough soft spots and vulnerability that I was rooting for her right from the beginning. And the Watchmen! The concept was so cool, and they had this deep bond of loyalty and trust and camaraderie that made me so wish I could be one of them, despite the fact that I'd be rubbish with a sword :) Even the dark and evil characters were complex and intriguing with sympathetic moments that took me by surprise.

James' evocative writing style really brought the story world to life. And what a story world! The fantasy elements blended with Biblical tradition in such a unique way, and I'm so grateful this is a series so we'll get to keep exploring in future books! I also appreciated the author's keen understanding of the human heart and the depth and scope of the battle between good and evil within individuals and over the entire land. But even when I couldn't stop turning pages in the midst of suspense and threat of imminent doom, the powerful tread of hope and healing underscored every scene and brought the story to its inspiring conclusion.

I'd recommend this book for any older teen or adult on the lookout for a well-written fantasy adventure filled with plot twists, intrigue, and memorable characters!

But don't just take my word for it! You can find many other reviews, plus some guest posts and interviews with the author, on the full blog tour schedule below! If you're ready to give Azriel a try, you can find the purchase links HERE. And make sure to check out leejameswrites.com to find out more about the author and her other books! Creating the World of Terabu by Special Guest Lauren Salisbury (Discernment Blog Tour)

Today we are thrilled to welcome Lauren Salisbury to Lands Uncharted as part of the blog tour celebrating her new release, Discernment! Discernment is the latest installment in The Legacy Chronicles, a series inspired by the life of Moses and the women around him. Fascinating, right? And Lauren took the time to share about her worldbuilding with us! I'll share more about Discernment and the blog tour below (including a GIVEAWAY!!), but first, here's Lauren!

Creating the World of Terabu

Worldbuilding is my happy place. I love everything about it from flora and fauna to cultural systems and histories. For each new setting in The Legacy Chronicles, I start with one concrete idea and built from there. In book one, U’du needed a harsh environment for the slaves to endure. The space cruiser where the Esarelians lived in book two needed to reflect their cold, unfeeling natures and their focus on advancement and prestige. Terabu needed to be completely different from either of those, and it had to revolve around trade.

The culture of Terabu, I decided, would be vibrant, with many layers to explore. It is partially based on my experiences of living in the Middle East and was so much fun to create. The textures, colours, and scents are big and bold, dazzling in their array, inviting in their warmth. The people are hospitable, traditional, and honourable. The weather is temperate, and the scenery is stunning.

One of the things I loved most about my time in Beirut was the food. Rich, fresh, and flavourful, even the thought of some of those meals makes my mouth water and evokes wonderful memories. I did not insert specific dishes into Discernment, but the overall feel of their food is the same. Lots of stews and salads, spices and dips, fruit eaten fresh from the trees, and a cottage industry around an olive-like plant called roiga.

In terms of the society itself, the first decision I made was to remove money from the equation, creating a stark contrast with the other species in the series. Teraburans use a barter system built on honour, where a man’s word is his bond. This led naturally to an abhorrence for lying that allowed me to put several characters in situations where that could be tested. It also informed some of the colloquialisms used in the novel.

“But how did you translate this into a science fiction setting?” you ask. By being extremely creative and by employing my secret weapons—my nieces.

I try to include them in my writing journey because I love feeding their creativity, and they get so excited about seeing their ideas in print. Terabu’s flora and fauna began with a strange plant with black sap called qayk and half-chicken half-octopus type creatures called vevom. Did I mention I went to my youngest nieces for Discernment? That was okay, it provided a challenge, and they got to have fun inventing weird and wonderful things.

Other aspects came from being the quirky individual that I am. I love to play with things, finding unique ways to see them. Graxylan came from wondering how dangerous sloths would be if they could move fast. Duntratha are my answer to how to insert dragons into science fiction—you make them wingless and use them to ride. And space pirates just because.

Adding technology also gave the story a more science fiction feel, though I was careful not to undermine the traditional culture I had created. The Teraburans are no fools. When off-worlders first arrived, they saw the need for defence and the development of more advanced technology. Fortunately, they were able to trade for these things, using their skills with produce and textiles to form partnerships that prevented them being swallowed up by the powerful Esarelians. Now they are the central supplier in the known universe, which means they can live relatively free from interference.

At the end of the day, Discernment is about the people, and no matter where we go and what technology we have, people are the same. We all have dreams, goals, families, cultural values and expectations, and we all want to be seen and accepted for who we are. Discernment, hopefully, deals with that issue. But it’s okay to read it for the space pirates and sekala buns too.

Doesn't this sound amazing?? Now I'm even more excited to get started reading! And Lauren even included a fun recipe for us inspired by the food of Terabu!

In case you want to know more about Discernment, here's the back cover blurb:

In Jiya’s world, the only choice a woman has is who she will marry. When she meets a mysterious off-worlder, she must decide how far she is willing to push the boundaries of Teraburan culture to gain her freedom, and whether that is truly what she wants.

Mahsan has never been accepted for who he is. The sole human raised on an Esarelian cruiser, his attempts to belong led only to disaster and him becoming a fugitive. When he is invited into the home of a Teraburan clan leader, he finds a place where he could finally put down roots. But his past haunts him, and he will need to make peace with it if he wants any kind of future in his new home.

Not everyone approves of Jiya and Mahsan’s friendship, and some will stop at nothing to keep them apart. As the unlikely pair discover their true calling, they will have to confront everything they thought they knew and learn to see themselves as they never have before.

Interview with Kendra E. Ardnek (Love and Memory Blog Tour)

We're so excited to welcome Kendra E. Ardnek back to Lands Uncharted today as part of the blog tour celebrating her new release, Love and Memory! (You can find our interview with her from 2018 HERE.) Love and Memory is Book 3 in the Rizkaland Legends and releases TODAY! I'll share more about the book below, but first Kendra took the time to answer some questions for us! Enjoy!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hello! I’m the self-proclaimed Arista of Fairy tales, I write books, and in my free time I raise dragons and flip hamburgers at McDonalds. *cough* I am an actual glitter explosion and possibly also a cat, because if you leave a box lying about, I will sit in it.

Ha, I love it! What inspired you to start writing fantasy?

I had a very rough childhood. Nothing that was any one person’s fault, but, especially in the early half of my teens, it really felt like life wouldn’t let up. I turned to fiction and especially fantasy as a place where I could hide and life could make sense, and it naturally led to me writing it as it gave me even greater control of … something.

I'm so glad you found an outlet you can enjoy and share with others! Which fictional character (book or movie) do you most relate to, and why?

As a kid, definitely Ella from Ella Enchanted (book, not the movie). At the moment, I’m not really sure, but she definitely still clicks with me in a way few other characters have.

YES!!! Ella Enchanted has always been one of my favorites, too :) What advice would you share with an aspiring author?

Read. Read. Read.

Write. Write. Write.

Edit. Edit. Edit.

And don’t be in a rush. Success doesn’t come overnight – no one will take your writing seriously if you don’t take it seriously and give it the dignity it deserves.

Absolutely! Love and Memory, Book 3 in the Rizkaland Legends, releases today! Congratulations!! What inspired you to write this series?

I didn’t like the 2005 Narnia movie when it came out and thought I could do better. That’s it. That’s the story.

Plain and simple, I like it! Did any of the events in the book surprise you as you were writing?

Not strictly, but there were definitely a lot of things that went down but weren’t part of the original plan. Such as Wyn. Definitely Wyn. All the hugs for Wyn. Anywho.

Now you have me curious about Wyn! The covers for this series are lovely! What went into the design process?

So, originally, I had a cousin design the covers for the first two books. Now, he was good at photoshop – went to school for it and everything – but he didn’t know cover composition, and so, especially after we had a bit of a hoopla with a watermark on the first cover, I never really felt comfortable with them. Then a then-aspiring cover designer just started sending me fan covers for the series, and I liked each one better than the last until finally I just looked at one and went “That. That’s the look I wish I had for the series.”

Megan was more than thrilled to see her covers on the actual books, and actually refused payment, instead only wanting copies of the books, which I was more than happy to send her. We did a few tweaks (including swapping out the silhouettes on LDTD for the ones I’d done myself for the existing cover), and I relaunched quite successfully.

Now, I had planned to purchase LaM’s cover outright (as she does now charge and she completely deserves it), but I kinda pushed too close to the deadline I needed, she didn’t have time in her schedule, and then she put up her prices (not by much, but my money was tight at that moment.), so I asked if she minded if I did LaM’s cover myself (I’d done most of my other covers, more or less under her tutelage, so I had a basic idea of what went into the first two’s covers), as I also have a very firm idea of what I wanted in my head by that point, and the mocks she had sent me a few years before (immediately upon announcement of the title), were nearly there but not quite it.

It went through a bit of a process, and I learned a few new things along the way, but here we are, and I’m just so much in love with this thing.

I love hearing about how covers develop, and how cool that your cousin and a fan both got to be involved! Can you give us any insights into your next project?

I accidently wrote reverse Frozen and thus realized that Frozen is actually a retelling of Sense and Sensibility, but with a Snow Queen aesthetic and “oops, the guy I kinda like is already engaged” swapped out for “I have ice magic!” as the elder sister’s secret. I mean Elsa/Elinor, Anna/Marianne. Need I say more?

…

I’m writing a mash up of Sense and Sensibility and Snow White and Rose Red, and it’s due for release in September alongside an unknown quantity of other SWRR retellings. The Frozen parallels weren’t on purpose, and I’m not changing the narrative to either lean in or avoid them (basically, it’s a subtle plotline of “what if Anna had the ice magic, not Elsa”), but I find them hilarious.

Interesting! I've never thought of Frozen that way, but I can totally see it! That sounds like a fantastic mashup! Thank you so much for visiting today!

You can purchase Love and Memory HERE. And here's the back cover blurb:

When a Queen forgets,
Her enemies rejoice in her weakness.
But when the Queen remembers,
They tremble in fear.
When a King loves,
His country rejoices with him.
But when that love is broken.
The land is broken, too.
Can Water and Fire join again?
Can Love and Memory be restored?

They spent years in Rizkaland. They ruled the land, forged friendships, built families, and made it their home. But then it was time to return to Earth, and their former lives just don’t fit anymore. Clara and Andrew struggle to reevaluate their priorities when hundreds of miles separate them. Reuben and Petra are lost as they seek a balance between their old friendship and their Rizkan marriage. And Ashna and Noraeto never planned to return, so what life is there for them on Earth?

When the unthinkable happens and a new enemy arises, they’re all thrown back into Rizkaland, into a young prince’s rise to power and struggle to build alliances for his kingdom. But they no longer belong in their other world, either.

Are good memories too much to bear?

Themes in World Diver by Haylie Hanson (World Diver Book Tour)

We have a special treat for you today! I'm so excited to welcome Haylie Hanson to Lands Uncharted today as part of the World Diver Book Tour! World Diver is a young adult science fantasy releasing on April 20th! I can't wait!! I'll share more about the book and author below, but first Haylie took the time to tell us about the themes in her story. Enjoy!

If you knew your destiny was something greater than yourself, something bigger and scarier than you could possibly imagine, that might involve the ultimate sacrifice with no guarantees your side will come out on top… would you do it anyway?

Would you be the hero of your own story if it mean you had to leave everything you’d ever known forever?

Humans are conditioned to want safety and security, and Callie James, the main character of World Diver, is no exception. As much as I can say I’m a travel-loving, bucket-list-making, extroverted people-person, I like safety, too. I’m not comfortable with the unknown. I’d like to think that if I were confronted with a destiny filled with sentient robots, superpowers, and interdimensional gateways through the multiverse, I’d be totally stoked—ready and willing to take a leap of faith into a brand new adventure. But in reality, I’d be just as terrified as Callie, and probably even more reluctant than she is to believe I’m anything worthy or important.

One of the themes I wanted to explore when writing World Diver was the idea of being stuck in our fears, and what we’d be willing to sacrifice after learning our true purpose. Callie is pretty happy being stuck—she knows she’s not meant to be a slacker forever, but she has no idea what she might be meant to do besides surf with her best friend and avoid the “college talk” with her overbearing dad. Her natural reaction is to stick her head in the sand and hide rather than confront what makes her afraid. When destiny calls, Callie doesn’t immediately leap into action. She hides, and tries to get rid of the problem by throwing away an opportunity because it comes with a potential cost, choosing comfort and complacency over facing her fears.

Granted, murder-phantoms from another realm haunting your bedroom and stalking you across town are enough to make anybody pretty fearful. Who wants to actually face that, right?

And yet, no matter how much Callie tries to hide, she comes to learn (in a really big, superpowers-and-multiverse-piloting way) that fear and avoidance in the face of truth are never the solution. They just make our problems worse. When she’s finally asked to make the choice to do the right thing or hide forever—to choose the life she wants for herself—Callie stands up to her fear and chooses to be brave, even though she desperately doesn’t want to. After all, she might fail: her biggest fear of all. But even still, she takes the leap.

And in the end, it costs her. Boy, does it cost her big. But if she had to do it all over again… there’s no question she’d choose the same path. Every. Single. Time.

I hope in Callie readers can find a kindred spirit. She might start out as a girl who feels like a disappointment and a failure because she’s too afraid to take a risk, a walking self-fulfilling prophesy. But she learns that what makes her unique is nothing to be afraid of. To embrace her gifts—her quirkiness, her wit, and her great big heart, even if it might break. To look destiny in the eye and say “bring it on.” To dive into adventure, with no guarantee of what’s waiting on the other side of tomorrow.

To always seek the Light, even in the Darkest places.

Eeeep, this sounds SO GOOD! Want to know more? Here's the back cover blurb:

College, grades, extracurriculars--who cares? Sixteen-year-old slacker Callie James would rather make robot creations and surf waves with her best friend Will. Then she discovers a mysterious glowing rod under the ocean surface, and her entire world turns upside down.

One, her hands start glowing (weird). Two, she can now control people (awkward). Three, she accidentally brings her robotics project to life. Classes were hard enough without her robot Nemo literally eating her homework.

Only the reclusive Dr. Ormandi knows the truth: Callie is a Luminaut (aka a light wizard) and it’s her destiny to reunite the shattered multiverse by collecting all the Light Cores (aka the glowstick of doom) in all the other worlds. To do this, she must repair the World Diver, the fifty-foot tall robot lurking in Dr. Ormandi’s basement hangar.

As Callie learns about her Luminaut powers, Nate crash lands into her life. He’s hot. Funny. Crazy about her. One problem: he’s technically dead. Oh, and he insists uniting the multiverse will destroy everything.

Pursued by murderous interdimensional phantoms and plagued by insecurities, Callie must protect her family and friends, while figuring out who to trust.

And all before a deadly, looming evil snuffs out her Light for good.

You can pre-order World Diver on Amazon or other e-book retailers, or get an autographed paperback or autographed hardback! And here's more about the author:

Haylie Hanson writes YA fantasy and science fiction about quirky kids with superpowers finding the courage to embrace their destiny. She has an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars, Stranger Things, and Marvel. Haylie used to teach elementary special education before changing careers, and now crafts brand new worlds in between making snacks for her two tiny spawn. She loves to read any kind of YA fantasy, especially books with characters whose voice can reach out and grab her from page one. When Haylie isn’t writing, she can be found drinking very strong coffee, trying not to kill plants, and dreaming of saltwater hair and summertime beaches.

You can connect with Haylie on Instagram, Facebook, and her website. Thank you so much for joining us today, and congratulations on your upcoming new release!!

Clean Fiction Blog Tour: A Story Snippet from Traitor! (Laurie)

I'm so excited to bring the Clean Fiction Blog Tour to Lands Uncharted today! For all of March, Story Quest Academy is celebrating clean indie fiction for middle grade and young adult readers with a variety of book reviews, interviews, and other posts from authors and readers. Some of my favorite authors have already been featured, including Liz Delton, J.M. Hackman, and Mollie E. Reeder! I also had the opportunity to share a fun interview over at 5WildeFlowers a few weeks ago :) You can find the full schedule of posts, plus information on an amazing GIVEAWAY, below.

Today, I get to share the *first ever* sneak peek into my upcoming young adult fantasy, Traitor! Eeeek! Traitor is Book Two in my Tales of the Mystics series (though it can be read as a stand-alone) and follows Princess Penelope, who was embroiled in a traitorous plot against her fiancé and his kingdom of Imperia in Book One. The plot was foiled, and Penelope has now returned home in disgrace with both her confidence and her kingdom's relations with Imperia in shambles. This is the very first scene of Traitor, in which Penelope's life takes a new direction (as hinted at in the Epilogue of Common 😊). Enjoy!

Chapter 1

“Exiled to Delunia?” I gripped the edge of my chair before I could topple out of it.

When Papa asked me to join him in his study, the nervous twitch of his brow hinted something was wrong. But I’d expected a scolding about the cost of my latest gown or a request to admonish my sister Sophia about her flirtatious behavior or loose tongue.

Not this.

Papa adjusted his collar. “Not exiled, Penelope. It is a betrothal. A joyous occasion.”

Oh, yes. My last engagement had been such bliss.

“The emperor and his son are thrilled to be making the alliance.” He adopted his best diplomatic smile, spreading his hands across the polished surface of his desk.

I swallowed a scoff. Of course they were. The benefit would be entirely on their side. How could Papa even consider it? Delunia was miserably hot, the people were loud and unrefined, and they didn’t speak any form of Sandrinian.

And it was thousands of miles across the sea from my beloved Trellich. From the entire continent of Sandrin.

The nightmare my life had become over the past year was about to get even worse.

“Won’t the voyage take weeks? Will I ever see you again?”

“Only one week, if the weather is favorable.” A ripple pricked through Papa’s confidence. “But it is a long journey, I can’t deny it. We won’t be able to visit often, but I’m sure every few years or so…”

Every few years. I’d almost prefer to separate from them forever than to become a stranger to my own family. “But why? How could anything they’re offering in an alliance be worth sending me so far away?”

He hesitated for a beat. Two. “They trade many valuable materials, and it would certainly be in our best interest to support and encourage those relations.”

“We have valuable items to trade as well,” I argued. “They can’t match our textiles, nor our gemstones. Isn’t that reason enough for the Delunian royal family to foster our trade agreements?”

“Their navy is formidable, the best on the Toan Sea. It wouldn’t hurt to have such might on our side, especially”—he glanced away, avoiding my gaze—“since our relations with Imperia have become more strained than ever.”

“Imperia?” I gritted my teeth. The very name made me want to shudder. “They wouldn’t cause trouble now, not with the new trade agreement in place.”

A knot on the dark wood of Papa’s desk consumed his full interest.

I swallowed a huff of frustration. “Surely, they wouldn’t defy an agreement they so recently—”

“They didn’t sign the agreement, Penelope.” Papa’s gaze collided with mine, roiling with frustration and concern.

“What?”

“I received their response last week.” He massaged his forehead. “They do not wish to enter into negotiations with us at this time.”

My stomach sank so quickly, I expected to hear a thud on the floor. They refused to sign because of me. Our improved alliance was supposed to be sealed by my marriage to Raphael, the Imperian Crown Prince. Instead, I’d gotten mixed up in a treasonous—murderous—plot.

“You’re ashamed of me. That’s why you’re sending me away.” I curled my fingers into the smooth material of my skirt.

“Of course not, dearest.” He leaned back against the curved wood forming the back of his chair. “I, too, misplaced my trust in the Duke of Brantley. He managed to fool us all.” He straightened. “But people will talk, and this marriage might give you a chance for a fresh start.”

A fresh start. Was such a thing possible? Another fiancΓ©. A new country to explore. More opportunities to squander, relationships to destroy.

I gnawed at my lip. No, I mustn’t think like that.

The Duke of Brantley fooled even his dear friends, his own king and queen. I’d never step foot beyond Glonsel Palace again if my every thought anticipated future mistakes.

“Do you know anything of the Delunian prince?” I channeled stern tension into my legs, drawing on every last reserve from my etiquette training to sit still rather than fidget.

Papa smiled, apparently pleased by my feigned interest. “I met him when he was just a boy. A stout little fellow, clearly gentle-hearted and eager to learn. His father has spoken highly of him in his letters. Says he’ll make a fine husband, and one day, emperor.”

As though a father’s word could be trusted on such a subject. Especially when he sought to convince us to agree to the marriage.

But Papa looks so hopeful… “That is—comforting, I suppose. How old is he?” I pressed my lips together to prevent them forming a grimace. Please, Luminate, don’t let him be ancient.

“Only a few years your senior. Nineteen, I believe.”

That, at least, was a relief. “Then I am to be an empress.” The word tasted foreign—equal parts intriguing and distasteful—on my tongue.

“Indeed. And what a lovely one you’ll be.” Papa stood, rounded his desk, and placed a warm hand on my shoulder. “You shall be missed, child, more than I can say. But I do think it’s for the best. You’ve an entire lunar cycle to prepare for your departure, so take some time to get adjusted to the idea.”

An entire lunar cycle. He spoke the words as though they described a vast length of time, not the span of four weeks.

I rose, tucking my hands behind my back to hide their trembling. “I have much to think on and prepare. I’d best—”

“Of course.”

I hardly registered his reply before he clenched me tightly to his chest. Burying my face in his velvet doublet, I shut my eyes against welling tears. I’d be with my family for a lunar cycle yet, and they’d visit every once in a while. We could always write letters that would take weeks to travel across the Toan Sea…

A whimper escaped, and Papa clutched me tighter. Please, don’t make me go.

Lament Character Spotlights by Laura L. Zimmerman (Lament Blog Tour)

We are thrilled to welcome Laura L. Zimmerman to Lands Uncharted today as part of the blog tour celebrating her upcoming new release, Lament! We featured Book One in Laura's Banshee Song Series, Keen, in a review and behind-the-scenes post, and now we're excited to share character spotlights from Lament! I'll share more about the book below, but for now, here's Laura!

In the second book of the Banshee Song Series, Caoine unexpectedly travels to the Unseelie Realm. This opens the door to a whole new cast of characters! While we still get to see a few favorites from Keen, Lament welcomes you to the land of the fae. Let’s get to know a few of the characters!

Aibell: This tough-as-nails faerie is one of the first Caoine will be introduced to once she arrives in the Unseelie Realm. Aibell is wicked with a bow and arrow and just as talented with a sword. The secret to her skill at weaponry lies with a story from her past. How is she connected to King Raghnall and why does she look so familiar to Caoine?

Laoise: (LEE sha) This girl is no ordinary wisp. Laoise stands a solid six feet tall but is always quick to offer a gentle smile. Her silver eyes glow with radiance, making her appear partially transparent. That is, when she’s not changing into a ball of light to zip away and confuse even the most observant. Her closest friend is Killian but she finds a special connection to Caoine that makes her especially protective.

Killian: A tall Light Elf, Killian is technically from the Seelie Realm. He’s downright dangerous with a bow and arrow, and Caoine is thankful he’s on her side, when it comes to helping her escape the Unseelie. His formal elegance often makes him appear as if he’s standing perfectly still, giving off an air of royalty. But what are his roots and why does he prefer to reside in the Winter Realm when it’s not his real home?

Gar: He’s short, he’s a goblin, and he’s always a bit of a grump! His name means “god spear”, which makes sense since he’s oddly good with the spear―beyond good. In fact, he never misses his mark. He looks like a child, if said child could grow a mass of hair with deep wrinkles that reflected a life of worry. Although he doesn’t exactly trust Caoine, he’s committed enough to help her on her journey, even if he never cracks a smile.

Nym: This little man quickly becomes one of Caoine’s closest companions. As a faen, he shouldn’t desire to be around other fae, or a half-human for that matter. But his loyalty is strong and he’d certainly never tell a lie, even if he could. He often disappears without any notice but he somehow appears at just the right time. Caoine learns to keep this odd guy close, especially when she isn’t sure who can be trusted.

Of course, we’ll meet a few more friends along the way, including a surprise character that remains a secret for now. (Shhh!) And our old favorites will be there for you, too!

Thanks for meeting my friends of Lament. I’d love to hear which character is your favorite!

Eeep, I started this book earlier this week and now I'm even more eager to keep reading!! Lament releases on January 26th and can be pre-ordered through Amazon (paperback and e-book) or Barnes & Noble (and after you've pre-ordered, make sure to go HERE to fill out the form for some amazing pre-order swag!) Here's a little more about the book:

Half-fae banshee, Caoine, is devastated by the loss of her father, and graduation is just around the corner. Ignorant of an old enemy seeking revenge, she is whisked away to the Unseelie Realm where she learns someone dear to her is being held captive. She vows not to go home until he's free.

Then she finds out she's trapped, unable to return to the human realm.

In order to go home, she must set aside old prejudices and work with a nemesis to survive faerie tricks and fae creatures hungry for human blood. Only then will she discover the secret to her escape and her loved one's freedom.

Aided by an unlikely band of fae, she uncovers more about her banshee powers than she dreamed possible, even as the fae remind her just how human she really is.

She'll take the drama of high school over the pettiness of the fae any day.

Make sure to stop by the Online Release Party for Lament next Thursday, January 28th, and check out the other stops on the blog tour (find the full tour schedule HERE)! Thank you so much for visiting today, Laura, and congratulations on your new release!!

Crucial Decisions by Special Guest Rachel Rossano (Living Sacrifice Blog Tour)

We are so excited to welcome Rachel Rossano to Lands Uncharted today to talk about her newest release, Living Sacrifice, the third and final book in her The Talented series! This finale released earlier this week and I am so excited for it. If you recall, I reviewed the first book in the series, Seventh Born, last month and gushed about the trilogy's heroine, Zezilia, being one of my favorite strong female leads. Rachel is going to share about the crucial decisions that make Zez such a strong heroine.

The Talented series concludes on November 2, 2020 with the release of the final novel, Living Sacrifice. The fantasy trilogy centers around two seventh-born Talented, those with the abilities of telepathy and telekinesis. The heroine of the series, Zezilia, chooses to defy the expectations of her family, her society, and her gender to fill roles that many consider beyond her. The process that brought her to these positions connect back to three crucial decisions in the series.

In the first book, Seventh Born, Zezilia discovers she has potential to be a great Talent with the ability to communicate via thoughts and to move things with her mind. Not only is this unexpected in a female, but it is also undesirable. Many in her culture consider female talents not worth training. Thankfully, she is discovered by a man who does not have such a restricted view. He offers her the opportunity to train as a Talent. When she accepts this invitation, she is very aware that she is choosing to defy both societal and familial expectations. However, she longs for something more than the alternative, marriage and children.

In the second book, The Defender, Zezilia has completed the first part of her training as a Talent. Ready to begin using her new skills, she takes on the role of defender of the sept son. She sees this as an opportunity to serve, support, and make a difference in her world. However, it becomes quickly apparent that her presence is going to cause more trouble for the sept son than help. Still, she chooses to face the opposition because she feels she has a purpose, a role that only she can fill.

In the final book, Living Sacrifice, through a series of events, Zezilia finds herself unexpectedly abandoned by her mentor. Midst her struggles to find a new purpose and place as her country struggles through a prolonged civil war, she receives a summons. The sept son has disappeared and the high king wants her to fill the position. Overwhelmed by the immense responsibility, Zezilia takes up the role of leadership. She didn't choose to accept because she wanted the power or because she would be widely accepted. In fact, she says yes despite knowing that many would reject her in that role. Instead, she takes on the load for the sake of the country and the man she has grown to love. She can't walk away when people need her.

In Zezilia's journey, she never rejects her gender. Although she longs to be more useful and more helpful, she never desires to be other than what she is. Staying true to the core of who she is, she does great things because she is willing to serve, love, take risks, and sacrifice for others. She gradually grows into this strength as the story progresses. Through a series of choices, she learns the skills to stand on her own feet and support those she loves.

I love Zezilia's journey! And it really makes this series fun, exciting, and inspiring to read! I was also cheering on the final stages of growth (including the culmination of the slow burn romance) in this book. πŸ’–  Thank you so much for sharing more about Zez with us, Rachel. Here's a little more about her:

Rachel Rossano specializes in clean romantic fiction set in historical-feeling fantasy worlds. She also dabbles in straightforward historical romance and not-so-strict speculative fiction. A happily married mother of three children, she divides her time between mothering, teaching, and writing. She endeavors to enchant, thrill, entertain, and amuse through her work. A constant student, she seeks to improve her skills and loves to hear from readers.

You can connect with Rachel on her website, Facebook, and Amazon.

And now some more about Living Sacrifice which is available now!

Separated, but still joined, they strive for freedom.

Left behind at the sept son's compound, Zezilia Ilar struggles with the after effects of her prolonged commisceo-link with Hadrian. She devotes herself to caring for the wounded arriving almost daily from the battlefields. Pressed to perform procedures and make decisions far beyond her training, Zez grows in confidence and skill. All the while, she wonders if she'll see Hadrian again, fearing the worst possible news will arrive any day.

Sept Son Hadrian Aleron fights to bring peace to his home nation. Allied with the new high king, he and a small army of Talented struggle to retake the capital city. Elitists, though scattered, continue to pick off the strongest of his men. As he battles the remnants of the commisceo-link and tries to organize the campaign, he begins losing himself to exhaustion. Only a miracle will keep him alive.

Living Sacrifice is the third in a trilogy. Reading Seventh Born and The Defender first is recommended.

Themes in Ashen by Special Guest H.L. Burke (Ashen & Met By Midnight Blog Tour)

Remember last week when we got to hear from Janeen Ippolito about the inspiration behind her new Cinderella retelling, Met By Midnight? Today we're thrilled to welcome H.L. Burke to Lands Uncharted to share about the themes in her very different but equally awesome Cinderella retelling, Ashen! You can learn more about the author and the book below, but first, here's Heidi!

Beauty and the Ash Lizard

I’m human. I’m definitely human. What else could I be but human?

Lizbete is an odd little thing. Abandoned as an infant by unknown parents, she grows up overshadowed by the strange occurrences of the night of her arrival, an outcast in the only home she’s ever known. She has amber eyes, a nearly skeletal frame, and unnaturally gray skin. Worse, though, is her carefully guarded secret: the fact that when she touches someone she pulls heat from them, sometimes to the point of injury.

Because of this, Lizbete sees herself as a bit of a monster, a danger to those closest to her, odd and undesirable. She has a small handful of people who actually care for her: Auntie, the tavern owner who adopted her as an infant; Elin, a younger girl whose chronic illness causes her to also feel like an outsider amongst the townsfolk; and Brynar, Elin’s brother and the mayor’s son, who has come to see Lizbete’s kind heart in watching her interact with his baby sister.

The other villagers tend to either ignore or openly scorn Lizbete. They’ve given her the nickname “ash lizard” due to her strange gray skin and the way she skulks in the ashes beside the fire (her attempt to stay warm). Throughout the book Lizbete struggles with the idea that anyone could want to be with her, that she could ever have a place among other humans, to the point where she starts to wonder if she’s really human at all.

When Brynar starts to exhibit romantic interest in her, her confusion and self-doubt explode. After all, if the village won’t accept her as a kitchen maid in their local tavern, what will they have to say about her as the bride of their favorite son? Doesn’t Brynar deserve someone who he can be proud to stand beside? Someone ... beautiful?

“Beautiful on the inside just means not beautiful at all. If you are honest, Brynar, if you compare me to any other girl in this village with a healthy complexion and appealing figure, can you truly say I am beautiful?”

Beauty is a weird concept. Women are very quick to label themselves as “not beautiful” but generally speaking this means “not reminiscent of current societal norms.” At one point, plump women were the models every artist used. Victorians romanticized pale skin whereas we now have people who will literally paint themselves to avoid this. Beauty as a societal construct is a strange mix of fads that change over the years. Due to this, if we define beauty as what is preferred by the culture in any given year, the concept is useless as a set standard. Beauty has as much value as any other fashion trend. It’s a fleeting way to judge something in the now, and future generations will probably look back at our current standards and mock us the way we snicker over the excessive big hair and acid wash looks of the 80s.

So, if that is what we mean by beautiful, then beauty is neither something to strive for or to laud.

From an emotional standpoint, I do like the idea that everyone is beautiful. After all, we’re God’s creations. What nerve of us to hold up something he made--be it a rock, or a cuttlefish, or a stranger on the street, or even ourselves--and say “this is a mistake. It’s not something I like. It should be prettier!”

And while there is truth in that, if everything and everyone is beautiful, then again, it doesn’t really mean much. We humans crave to be special, to be individuals, not painted with the general brush of “you’re beautiful, just like everyone else” because if it’s everyone, it’s just a given, not a positive or a negative, just a thing that is.

Finally self-esteem prettiness, the kind where YOU are happy with how YOU look, no matter what anyone else thinks, that’s great. I hope everyone finds it, but humans are social creatures. While we can hold ourselves up as independent individuals who don’t need the approval of others, that denies a portion of ourselves that is fed by relationships, by kind words from others …

“Beauty means outside. It means that when a boy looks at me, he actually would want to touch me, and that … that isn’t what I am.”

Because beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and if someone loves you, they should think you’re beautiful. No matter what you look like, no matter what you feel about yourself, if someone loves you, you should be beautiful to them.

I think my favorite quote on beauty is from the character Amy Pond in Doctor Who: “You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful, and then you actually talk to them, and five minutes later they're dull as a brick. But then there's other people, and you meet them and you think 'not bad, they're okay', and then you get to know them, and their face sort of becomes them, like their personality's written all over it, and they just they turn into something so beautiful...”

Because that’s why beauty matters. Beauty is a signpost on the road from friendship to love. It’s a place where a person’s spirit has leaked out onto their skin and you realize they are the most beautiful person in the world to you.

And that’s when beauty matters.

His hand caressed her cheek, her blood drawing on his heat ever so slightly, just enough to taste the stability of his presence. “If that’s what it means, if it just means that I want to touch you, then yes. Liz, I can honestly say you are beautiful. In fact, you are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

Lizbete’s journey to self-value involves many other aspects than just her romance with Brynar. There’s the whole thing with the “freezing with a touch” and the mystery of where she even came from and what her purpose is amongst the villagers.

Still, the joy of a lonely character finding that to someone else they are precious was my favorite thing to write in this book, and I hope readers enjoy it too.

Artwork by Hannah Rogers

I love that message so much, and that scene between Lizbete and Brynar happened to be one of my favorites in the book! The romance was so sweet, but you should also read it for the mystery and intrigue. And for Elin and her hilarious snark :) Here's the back-cover blurb:

Stealer of warmth, bringer of death. What if Cinderella had a secret that kept her locked away?

Unable to make her own body heat, foundling Lizbete survives in the tavern kitchen, drawing warmth from the fires, the sun—and sometimes, other living beings. Her days are spent cooking alongside the tavern owner and avoiding the suspicious gazes of the villagers in her small northern town. While she quietly longs for the handsome Brynar, she knows she has no chance with the mayor’s son, even if he invites her to the First Frost festival.

When sudden earthquakes strike Brumehome, blame falls upon Lizbete, and not even her friendship with Brynar can protect her. She finds shelter in the dangerous caverns of nearby Ash Mountain. There she discovers mysterious people with her same ability to draw heat—and a fiery doom in the mountain that slowly awakens with every quake.

Now the festival Lizbete thought to avoid is her only chance to warn the villagers. Yet even with Brynar at her side, can the strange girl dubbed the Ash Lizard hope to save the town that fears her?

A rugged YA Cinderella retelling set in a fantasy world with light steampunk elements.

Eeeep, it's so good! You can find Ashen on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. And here's a little more about H.L. Burke:

Born in a small town in north central Oregon, H. L. Burke spent most of her childhood around trees and farm animals and was always accompanied by a book. Growing up with epic heroes from Middle Earth and Narnia keeping her company, she also became an incurable romantic. Married to her high school crush who is now a US Marine, she has moved multiple times in her adult life but believes that home is wherever her husband, two daughters, and pets are.

Inspiration for Met By Midnight by Special Guest Janeen Ippolito (Ashen & Met By Midnight Blog Tour)

We are so excited to welcome Janeen Ippolito to Lands Uncharted today to talk about her upcoming new release, Met By Midnight! Uncommon Universes Press (one of my favorite small presses, if you recall 😊) is publishing both Met By Midnight and Ashen by H.L. Burke  - two very different but equally fabulous Cinderella retellings - on September 22nd! I'll share more about the author, Met By Midnight, and the blog tour below, but first Janeen is going to share about the inspiration behind her book!

Met By Midnight was inspired by a dream…and a breakdown.

We’ll start with the breakdown first, because that might have caught your attention. πŸ˜‰ A little over a year ago, I reached an extreme level of burnout and depression and anxiety, the likes of which led to me taking a few weeks completely off work (which I hadn’t done in a very, very long time—one of the dangers of liking your jobs too much), along with getting some much-needed therapy, supplements, and making lifestyle changes.

As I slowly started mentally recovering, I tried to write again, and nothing was working. Nothing. I had two active book series, and I couldn’t figure out what to write for either of them. The only thing I could write was poetry.

You might be thinking “hey, at least you’re writing poetry”, but for me, fiction is therapy as much as ‘work’ so I was a slightly cranky Janeen about this predicament.

However, one night I had an intriguing dream about a young woman in a blue dress racing toward a castle, even though another person was warning her away. She was there to steal something. Something incredibly important for her people. However, when she got there, a young man caught her—and oddly enough, he didn’t seem at all surprised to see her. But she was shocked to see him. End dream.

A few days later, when I was oh-so-calmly expressing (aka, whining about) my lack of writing mojo with a friend, she suggested I start drafting the dream. So I went for that, and ended up writing the middle of Met By Midnight. Which made for a very unique first draft that drove me crazy some days! Yeesh.

As soon as I started writing, I realized it was a Cinderella retelling, which made me super-happy, since that’s one of my favorite fairy tales—Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine is still one of my favorite books of all time. And since some of my own breakdown had stemmed from excessive people-pleasing, I decided to dig into the idea of sacrifice.

Cinderella is often held up as this epic heroine of sweet submission, quiet strength, and sacrifice in the midst of persecution. But very rarely does anyone really get inside the psychological stresses and difficulties of enduring that level of constant mental, emotional, and physical abuse. How did she keep it together? Did she never want to smite those against her? How many tears did she bury inside?

For added fun, I made Renna, the main character of my story, a Mender. The fantasy government requires her to use her healing gift to benefit others (they control who), even though every time she Receives an illness or injury, she endures great pain to recover. And she has no choice, no say in the matter. After all, if she can, then she should, regardless of the cost. Right?

Oh yes, and lest you think the story is 100% angst and hard situations, there is a sweet romance, some quirky side characters, cute sibling moments, political intrigue, and a far-too-adorable dog. Plus, there’s most definitely a happily-ever-after. Everyone needs a breather! Even in the midst of hardship and sorrow, there is always humor, joy, and hope. And through writing this story, I wrote my own way into fresh hope as well.

What an inspiring story! And let me tell you, friends, it made for a wonderfully exciting, thought-provoking book! Not surprisingly, I was a huge fan of that happily-ever-after πŸ’™ Thank you so much for sharing with us, Janeen! Here's a little more about her:

Janeen Ippolito believes in Jesus, true love, and the power of your unique words. She's a bestselling author of speculative fiction, writing resources, and poetry. She's also an editor, author coach, marketing strategist, and the president of Uncommon Universes Press. When she's not immersed in the geektastic world of words, she's helping her husband with his youth swordfighting ministry, exploring a slew of random hobbies, and posting up cute animal videos on social media. This extroverted writer loves to connect, so find her on Facebook, Instagram, and her website janeenippolito.com.

And here's a little more about Met By Midnight, which can be pre-ordered on Amazon!

An outcast prince. A captive healer. A single night that changes their destinies.

She lives a nightmare.

As a Mender, Renna is held captive to an endless cycle of receiving and recovering from the physical ailments of others—a cycle that led her mother to an early grave. When her father becomes deathly ill, Renna is desperate to save her only remaining family. Even if it means allying with criminals and taking an illegal mission into the royal palace on the night of their greatest ball.

He’s haunted by dreams.

Unable to be Mended, Prince Jaric’s existence is a curse to his family’s faΓ§ade of health and security. Marrying him off at the ball and sending him to a distant dukedom is the royal solution—but Jaric has his own plans. For years he’s dreamed of a young woman, a strong-hearted Mender he would give everything for. When she arrives the night of his betrothal, he’s determined to discover her true identity.

Met by midnight, their fates are entwined.

While escape seems the only answer, powerful forces conspire to keep Renna and Jaric within their cages. Forces that undermine the foundations of the kingdom itself—and threaten any hope of a future together.

This YA romance features Cinderella in an original fantasy world with a dystopian twist.
