Weekend Reads with Caione (Vanessa)

Happy Friday! I hope your week has gone well and the weather is (hopefully!) starting to get a bit cooler! Who else is ready for fall? I know I am!

Well, if it is still hot where you're at, let's just pretend it's cold and snuggle up with a nice blanket and a fun book!

I've recently had the pleasure of reading Keen by Laura L. Zimmerman. Here's what it's about:

Half-faerie Caoine has no control over the banshee lament she sings each night, predicting the death of others. A senior in a brand new high school, she expects the same response she's received at every other school: judgment from fellow students over her unusual eyes and unnaturally white skin and hair. However, when Caoine arrives at West Lincoln High, for the first time in her life she finds friends. Real friends.

But being a teenager is never easy, especially when the star soccer player, Oliver, sets his sights on her. Allowing him to get close means revealing her curse to the human world. She can't let that happen.

Life spins further out of control when her lament comes out during the day, those whose death she predicts die right in front of her, and a dark faerie known only as the Unseelie prince blames Caoine by leaving her the creepiest notes ever. Her curse is notsupposed to work like that.

In a race against time, Caoine must uncover the Unseelie prince's identity and stop a spell before it unleashes hell on earth, all while trying to control her banshee song and finding a place among her peers.

Senior year just got real.

Before I read Keen, I couldn't remember the last time I had read a book in a high school setting. I was so glad I picked this one up because it was such a fun read! There were faeries, friends, drama, love, humor, and excitement all bundled together.

Zimmerman does a great job of making characters relatable for the teen genre and others who are older than teens, but still love Young Adult books (me :-D). I enjoyed the healthy relationships included in Keen from Caione and her father to Caione and Oliver.

Overall, this is an enjoyable and fun read to add to your TBR pile!

The next awesome new release is Legend of the Storm Sneezer (The Stormwatch Diaries Book 1) by Kristiana Sfirlea. LotSS is so much fun to read! I fell in love with Rose and Marek the instant I read about them! This middle grade story is packed with goofiness, great stories, and funny quips you'll enjoy!

Here's what it's about: Legend Seeker. Part-time Ghost Hunter. Time Traveler.

Thirteen-year-old Rose Skylar sneezed a magical storm cloud at birth, and it’s followed her around ever since. But when Stormy causes one too many public disasters, Rose is taken to Heartstone, an asylum for unstable magic. Its location? The heart of a haunted forest whose trees have mysteriously turned to stone.

They say the ghosts are bound to the woods … then why does Rose see them drifting outside the windows at night? And why is there a graveyard on the grounds filled with empty graves? Guided by her future selves via time traveling letters, Rose and Marek—best friend and potential figment of her imagination—must solve the mystery of the specters and the stone trees before the ghosts unleash a legendary enemy that will make their own spooks look like a couple of holey bed sheets and destroy Heartstone Asylum.

Letters from the future are piling up. Rose can’t save Heartstone herself. However, five of herselves, a magical storm cloud, and a guardian angel who might very well be imaginary? Now that’s a silver lining.

But will they find what killed the ghosts before what killed the ghosts finds them?

The final new release is Prince of Shadow and Ash (The Mercenary and Mage Book 1) by Selina R. Gonzalez. This book stole my heart! Regulus and Adelaide are absolutely adorable and my new favorite book couple. If you love A Knight's Tale, Pride & Prejudice, and The Hobbit, definitely check out this book!

Weekend Reads: Hall of Blood and Mercy series by K.M. Shea (Kimberly)

Hi everyone! If you're anything like me, you are digging into books for some relief from our currently crazy real world circumstances. And I am so excited to share about a brand new series by one of my favorite authors, K.M. Shea!

This series is a new Urban Fantasy take inspired by a fairytale, Donkeyskin to be exact. Donkeyskin is not a fairytale for the faint of heart nor does it lend itself easily to non-horror retellings. That said, Shea shows why she is one of the queens of fairytale retellings because she found the perfect venue for tackling Donkeyskin while taking the cringe inducing parts of the story out. And I love it.

Magic Forged (Hall of Blood and Mercy Book 1)

My rating: 4.5 stars

Let me preface this by saying Urban Fantasy is one of my top favorite genres and I have read a TON of it over the years, both traditionally and indie published. However, Magic Forged is officially one of my top all time favorites ever and I do not see that changing any time soon. I was up all night reading this one even though I knew I had commitments the next day. I regret nothing. This book is so worth the lost sleep!

Hazel Medeis is a wizard, a severely vertically challenged one with a bit of a power problem. Being the Heir of a small pacifist wizarding house isn't made any easier with the death of her parents and then a coup by an unscrupulous jerk of a cousin. Forced out on her own, Hazel only escapes her cousin's schemes by pledging herself to the service of Killian Drake the supreme vampire in the region. Who may or may not be trustworthy.

This book is not a doom and gloom approach to Urban Fantasy nor is it overly gritty. Even though heartstrings are pulled and wrenched by the opening circumstances driving Hazel into House Drake. One of Shea's strong points in all her books is the wit/humor and the sheer character of the people and animals and even, in this case especially, houses. I love the humor and banter in this book and I absolutely adore the characters, especially Killian and his top two vampires, Celestina and Josh. They are not what you expect from UF vampires really. Killian tries, he tries to be the intimidating looming dark and mysterious vampire but his devilish sense of humor and Hazel's ability to bait him into snarky banter ruins it all. And Celestina is one of my favorites because she's Killian's First Knight (second in command) but she loves girl talk and shopping and self-pampering at the salon complete with mani pedis. Josh is . . . I'm laughing just trying to write about him. I never thought that a poetically morose vampire would be so much fun but he's so unexpected (without being truly over the top) that he just works. Also he's essentially a walking armory as the Second Knight. Hazel's reactions to everyone makes for so many laugh out loud moments. That's not even touching on the rest of the cast including a fae with a bald cat called Aphrodite.

This book is so much fun and there's a lot of humor and snark and banter. But Hazel also has a discernible growth arc because she has the "annoyingly virtuous moral compass" as Killian likes to describe it. Which I love. She doesn't compromise the true core of who she is even as she grows although she learns that what she's been taught all her life and what is truly right don't necessarily match up.

Magic Redeemed (Hall of Blood and Mercy Book 2)

My Rating: 4.5 Stars

Can I just take a moment to scream because this book has so many FEEEELS! I adore book two as much as I loved book one. Hazel is coming into her own and we get more Killian POV scenes (YESSSS!!!) with even more of the vampires and their snarky existence with the vertically challenged wizard. However, there's still the problem of the House and Hazel's continued weight of responsibility as the Heir.

Once again the characters and the banter are my favorite parts. I also love that we get even more of the House and its personality in this book. And Hazel has to come to terms with her power, the sealing of her power, and the way it was unlocked in book one. She does have more angst going on toward her parents but it never gets TOO heavy for the overall lighter tone of the series. It's nicely broken up by antics and snark. I do love it when Josh spouts something about death and another vampire has to tell him "That's not comforting."

Killian and Hazel. Oh my good gracious gravy! These two are on one of those slow burn romances that put you on the Feels rollercoaster. Cue Gollum screams at a certain spoiler. Right in the feels!

There's so much more I want to say about the things I loved and raved about with this one but I can't. Because SPOILERS! All I can say is I'm so glad the third book in this series is out today because I need it. I need it now. ;)

If you have never tried Urban Fantasy before, start with this series. It's a fresh take on the standard tropes of wizards, vampires, fae, and shifters in some of the best ways. It's not too harsh but not mindless fluff either. It falls perfectly into the category of Urban Fantasy with lots of heart and humor, which is honestly my favorite of them all.

Have you read this series already? What did you think?

Until next time,

Weekend Reads: Two Fairytales for Valentine's (Kimberly)

Happy Valentine's Day everyone! I don't know about you but I adore a good romance and this weekend is the perfect time to break out a romance set in a fantasy world with fairytale elements. I read a lot of books fitting this particular criteria but I managed to narrow it down to a single author and two connected books within a larger series.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars

Beauty and the Beast is easily my absolute favorite of all fairytales, which means I'm picky about my retellings because I far prefer the ones that don't feel like a copy of the Disney versions (even though I love those too). Lucy Tempest already impressed me with her debut books in this series, the Aladdin retelling trilogy, so I knew her take on Beauty and the Beast would be worth the read. And I was so right!

Beast of Rosemead picks up after Ada is torn away from Bonnie and Bonnie's father in Thief of Cahraman, following Bonnie's journey. While there are similarities to the basic Beauty and the Beast version, it's presented in an intriguingly different manner from your typical retelling. This is especially true with the inclusion of cameo characters who are the world's version of Robin Hood characters and the servants who've been transformed into monsters of legend instead of being invisible. Clancy, another victim of the curse, is not a servant but he is most certainly a delight.

I think my favorite part is the way Bonnie is forced to grow out of the naive somewhat selfish dreamer into genuinely caring and loving others instead of trying to make them fit her book fueled daydreams. Then the twist regarding her heritage has such intriguing potential while the finale is equal parts frustrating and intriguing because it sets everything up for an adventure unlike any other Beauty and the Beast retelling.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars

This was the conclusion I didn't see coming! Beauty and the Beast end up in Faerie! They, along with several other comrades both expected and unexpected, must battle their way through the contests, tricks, and deadly beauty of Faerie to find the means of breaking the curse before it's too late.

Most of the book deviates from the typical retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which I absolutely loved. The twist with Bonnie's heritage first hinted at in Beast played out beautifully and still managed to surprise me. Other twists show up but I can't really talk about them because spoilers.

One of the things I adore about this entire series is how Tempest is able to weave in all the little hints and setup for future books without it feeling clunky or disjointed (because foreshadowing can be HARD). In Beauty of Rosemead especially, we're treated to a lot of setup for Ornella (Ella) and her upcoming story, which will be a Cinderella meets Snow Queen mashup also set in Faerie. I'm looking forward to finally getting her story, which is available now for preorder and will release February 26th.

If you enjoy the fairytale retellings by Lea Doué and A.G. Marshall, you are going to love this series! While the duology picks up where Ada and Bonnie part ways in Thief of Cahraman, you can read it without first reading the Aladdin trilogy (although there are some minor spoilers at the very end).

Have you read this series already? What did you think of it? Any other fairytale retelling suggestions for me to check out?

Until next time,

Kimberly A. Rogers

Keen by Laura Zimmerman (Julie)

Multicolored eyes. Banshee songs. Faeries. Teenage love. Death. All come together to make up Laura Zimmerman's new book Keen, Banshee Song Series Book One. I admit teenage books aren't normally my go-to, but it sounded interesting enough to give it a try. And I'm glad I did!

Caoine's (pronounced Cane) a half-breed who doesn't know where she belongs. Different from her
peers with her pale hair and almost albino skin, and the most strikingly odd feature...her multicolored eyes. It's not the best recipe for making friends in high school.

Being a teenager is never easy, but Caoine has slightly bigger problems than boys, or even bullies. She sings songs. Songs of death. Since the day she was born, she's been cursed as a banshee, to sing the song of death every night. But now, her curse is acting up and there just so happens to be a handsome boy at her new school.

Here's what Amazon has to say:
You must walk the darkness to find the light.
Half-faerie Caoine has no control over the banshee lament she sings each night, predicting the death of others. A senior in a brand new high school, she expects the same response she’s received at every other school: judgment from fellow students over her unusual eyes and unnaturally white skin and hair. However, when Caoine arrives at West Lincoln High, for the first time in her life she finds friends. Real friends.
But being a teenager is never easy, especially when the star soccer player, Oliver, sets his sights on her. Allowing him to get close means revealing her curse to the human world. She can’t let that happen.
Life spins further out of control when her lament comes out during the day, those whose death she predicts die right in front of her, and a dark faerie known only as the Unseelie prince blames Caoine by leaving her the creepiest notes ever. Her curse is not supposed to work like that.
In a race against time, Caoine must uncover the Unseelie prince’s identity and stop a spell before it unleashes hell on earth, all while trying to control her banshee song and finding a place among her peers.
Senior year just got real.

Top 3 Faeries to Meet in Halayda (by special guest Sarah Delena White!)

We are thrilled to welcome Sarah Delena White to Lands Uncharted today as part of the blog tour for her debut release, Halayda! More information about Sarah and her book are included below, but first, here's Sarah sharing her Top 3 Faeries to Meet in Halayda!

Faeries: cute little people with wings who fly around granting wishes, typically while wearing flower hats and sprinkling pixie dust.

Right?

Not according to the legends of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. When creating Kyure (the world of the Star-Fae Trilogy), I delved into Celtic mythology and discovered some very different faeries - the sort you definitely don’t want to encounter on a dark night or a lonely moor! Here are three of my favorites, each of which inspired races and characters in Halayda.

3) Banshees

If you hear a piercing wail on the night wind, it means a banshee is nearby. It also means that someone’s days are numbered. These ghostly fairies come out to mourn the dead… before they die. Some legends say banshees only sing when members of the great Irish and Scottish houses pass away, while others say each family has their own banshee. Either way, the eerie mourners are always right!

My banshee character, Sidika, was a surprise—she silently crept into the story and became a major player before I even realized it. In Kyure, banshees’ powers go far beyond foretelling death. Sidika is also an empath and has wind-related powers… and is a legendary assassin in the fae Court. (How does an empath become an assassin? That question will be answered in book two of the Star-Fae trilogy!)

2) Faerie Hounds

These hounds will run their quarry into the ground, and if you hear one howl, you’re as good as dead. They’re often part of the Wild Hunt, an otherworldly band of fae folk associated with the underworld. But faerie hounds aren’t always what they seem! They will occasionally help people who are in trouble, and if you do one a favor they will return it in kind.

I’ve been intrigued by faerie hounds for years, so I really wanted them to make an appearance in Halayda, but I couldn’t have predicted the role they’d come to fill. It turned out that Sylvie, my protagonist, had a serious soft spot for them. No spoilers, though! ;-)

1) Pookas

These mischievous fairies are known for their pranks and tricks. They are shapeshifters who can take on a number of forms, but typically appear as a glowing-eyed horse, goat, or rabbit. They’re not necessarily evil, but they like their fun, sometimes to the point of being cruel. Pookas can range from blood-thirsty monsters to kindly creatures who perform random acts of help.

Mischief and benevolence make for an interesting combination, and I wanted a character who embodied both. Enter Zad, a clever, snarky, flamboyant pooka with a secret heart of gold. He’s also the “chief leader and most magnificent lord of all merchants on the black market,” but that’s another story.

So, why tell stories about faeries who are more likely to give you nightmares than grant you wishes? Perhaps because, in a sense, they are real. The myths of the Celtic world were born out of centuries of oppression and hard times—a dangerous world in which death was an ever-present reality. I wanted to honor those stories, while also putting a new spin on them by exploring what really makes something—or someone—a monster. Kyure is a world of danger, but it’s also a place of unexpected hope, and things are rarely what they seem at first glance.

Are you as fascinated by these characters as I am?? Halayda just released on March 23rd, and the Facebook Launch Party is TONIGHT at 8:00 PM EST! Hang out and chat with Sarah and other fans of her book here: https://www.facebook.com/events/132719553915217/

Here's the back-cover blurb for Halayda (which can be purchased on Amazon):

A mortal alchemist. A faerie king. A bond that transcends death.

Betrayed by a trusted mentor, Sylvie Imanthiya hides on the fringes of society, caring for half-fae orphans and trading her alchemical creations on the black market. She lives for the one night each season when she can see her dearest friend—a man whose destiny is far above hers.

King Taylan Ashkalabek knows better than to exchange halayda vows with a mortal. Even their friendship is a risk; love is an impossible dream. Then a brutal alchemical attack poisons his realm, unearthing a dark power within him—and leaving Sylvie with the ancient mark of Faerie’s savior.

Manifesting unpredictable abilities and aided by allies with their own secrets, Sylvie and Taylan journey into the wilds of Faerie to heal the damage and confront Casimir, an invincible star-fae determined to claim the realm as his own. But only their enemy knows Sylvie’s true capabilities—and Taylan’s weaknesses—and how to use them in his vicious schemes.

Her fate is life. His fate is death. With Faerie in the balance, Sylvie and Taylan must stand together before reality as they know it is destroyed.

And here's a little bit about the author:

Sarah Delena White was raised by wolves in an alternate dimension. She writes eclectic speculative fiction that reworks mythology with a fine balance of poetry and snark. She’s an experienced world traveler who loves to weave world folklore and ancient concepts into vibrant, original story worlds. She is also the Benevolent Firebird (acquisitions editor) for Uncommon Universes Press. When she’s not writing or editing, she can be found making jewelry, singing Irish ballads, drinking tea, and working a variety of odd jobs. She can be bribed with dark chocolate.

You can connect with Sarah on her Website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram.

Thank you so much for joining us today, Sarah! Halayda is next on my to-read list, and I can't wait!! Congratulations on your new release!
