How I Met My Husband (Laurie)

Everyone likes a good “how we met” story, right?  Especially with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, which happens to be a significant time of year in our story…

I met my husband during my first year of law school at a Valentine’s dinner and dance at the church we both attended – but don’t jump to any conclusions just yet :)  At dinner, a friend introduced me to the members of the church’s Young Adult group, including my husband. But our interactions for the evening ended at that, as my husband (who claims he can’t dance) disappeared as soon as dinner was over. I started getting involved in the Young Adult group after that, occasionally exchanging a word or two with my shy husband.

The turning point was when I needed to contact my husband about an event I was involved in, since he was in charge of posting events on the group’s Facebook page. We continued to write messages back and forth well after the event was over. By the time I went home for spring break, we were exchanging at least a page a day about our families, childhoods, school, work – anything and everything. When I got back we finally began to spend time together in person, mostly in connection with the Young Adult group, but occasionally just the two of us.

By the summer, we were hanging out one-on-one quite a bit (ending with good-bye hugs), but hadn’t had “the talk.” After I accompanied him to a barbeque with his college friends, at which I was asked several awkward questions along the lines of “How long have you two been dating?” and “How did he ask you out?” I finally got up the courage to ask him if we were dating. Characteristically, he answered “Do you want to be dating?” In the end, as you can probably guess, we figured out we did want to be dating :)

Eight months later, on the anniversary of the Valentine’s dance, he proposed. I think I managed to say “yes” somewhere in the midst of my tears :)

Probably not book- or movie-worthy, but it worked for us!  What are your favorite meet-up stories, either from real life or books / movies?  Do you prefer friends first, love at first sight, or something in between?

See you next time!
Laurie

  1. Thanks, Laurie! I'd love to meet Tom! He sounds so sweet!

I met my husband in high school. . . a friend said I'd like him, so I introduced myself to him in the lunchroom. Then I felt dumb, so didn't talk to him again for a year, when he noticed me wearing a Christian rock band t-shirt. We never dated in high school, although we hung out a lot and I wanted him to ask me to senior Prom. . . but, all's well that ends well, and after dating all through college, we finally ended up married. Readers, take note, I met him when I was 14!

    1. I'd love to meet your husband, too! Maybe we can do a double date or even get our families together sometime!

I think you should do a "How I Met My Husband" post sometime, too - it sounds like you guys have a fun story :)

    2. : ) I'd love to get together, with or without kiddos.

I'll add a "How I Met My Husband" article to my list of possible posts, too.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling. . . a Valentine's Dinner and Dance sounds romantic!

    1. Thanks Lucy! Not quite as exciting as Rafe and Leah, but the real life stories are fun, too :)

    2. Yeah - I hear you! I also met my hubby at a church young adult get together. Though, we didn't waste time. Hehehe. Started dating in January '07 and got married June '07. Hitting 9 years this June - Gosh I feel old!

    3. That's awesome that you guys met at a church young adult event, too! It's a great way to meet someone, I can think of at least 3 other couples that resulted from our group, and that's just during the time I was in it :) Wow, you certainly didn't waste any time, but when you've met the right person you just know, right? We'll be at 6 years this May, it's crazy how fast the time goes!

  3. Aww, it's so great to hear how you two met! And fun to hear Erin's story as well. :)

For books, I probably prefer something between friends first and love at first sight. I like it when they first meet each other during the novel, but I also want them to have a deep relationship that includes things like mutual respect and an understanding of each other's character. In other words, I want their relationship to have more to it than "He's so attractive," which is how some (but certainly not all) love at first sight novels are written. But if they're already friends before the novel opens, I sometimes feel like I missed something in their relationship, because I never got to see it from the beginning.

    1. Thanks Melinda! I generally prefer something in between, too, though some friends first stories are really sweet, like Jane Austen's Emma. I agree that love at first sight tends to be pretty shallow, though occasionally you hear a really good one. For example, according to my grandpa, when my grandma walked into the cafe where he was eating he pointed to her and told his friend "I'm going to marry that girl" and they went on to have a long and happy marriage. It doesn't get much more romantic than that :)

    2. That's true, I do like Emma. And Mansfield Park. I like them well enough to have read them each six or so times, anyhow. :)

I think I read more love at first sight than anything, simply because that seems to be the most common thing in the market right now. There are definitely some great novels that fall into that category as well. What a cute story about your grandparents!

  4. Cute and sweet story. I can hear him saying "Do you want to be dating?" when you asked him. So like him. So is that the BBQ where I first met you? The baby shower for Cy BBQ? I thought you were so sweet and was so happy to meet you that day. I am happy to hear we got the ball rolling with all our questions that day - love you all. Jaysa

    1. Thanks Jaysa! Ha, yes, I remember the "Do you want to be dating?" moment so well because it was exactly what I should've expected him to respond :) I later found out that he thought we were already dating, he just hadn't said anything to me about it - oh, boys! You're right, the baby shower BBQ is the one I was referring to. I really enjoyed meeting all of you that day, too - everyone was so friendly and welcoming. It probably won't surprise you to hear that most of the awkward questions came from Justin :) But I'm so glad it worked out the way it did and that we're still able to see all of you a few times a year!

    1. Thanks for commenting, Sophia! You're right, Anne and Gilbert have one of the best friends first stories ever written! Especially since they had to overcome such a rough start :)
